So when is a largemouth bass considered a LUNKER? Is purely based on weight? Length? Both? Does it vary state by state? What are your thoughts on this?

State by state and a lunker becomes a lunker when it makes you happy. But in my mind, anything over 12lbs is a lunker and I'm positive I will never catch one that big.

I would say a "Lunker" would be anything over 9lbs. Lunker is a relative term, not a definitive one. A Share Lunker in Texas is any Bass over 13lbs. Im not sure if any other states have the same type program. The list below is the terms I use and their definitions.
Skweaker = Keeper Toad = 3-4lbs. Kicker = 5+lbs. Hawg = 6-8+lbs. Lunker = 9+lbs Dbl. Digit = 10+lbs. Bucket Mouth = 11-12+lbs. Share Lunker = 13+lbs.
I think Toad and Hawg get misused the most, so this is my terminology. I'd like to hear what others have to say.

I would have to say that is a "location" thing. Texas, Mexico, Florida, California.... A 12lbr is a lunker... However in some of the Northern states where the growing season is much shorter and the lakes ice over. A fish half that size could be a lunker. JMO !

It's TOTALLY state by state!! I'm in Missouri and I can tell you that VERY few fisherman have EVER caught a bass over 6 pounds in this state. Yes, they're here and yes, I've caught some, but when you talk to most casual and even pretty serious fisherman, a 6 pounder is DEFINITELY a lunker. Matter of fact, a 4 pounder is a lunker up here and has a shot at winning you a big bass award in a tournament. When I go to Texas, I don't get too excited unless they're over 6 pounds and I wouldn't call anything under 8 pounds a lunker. But, each to their own. If you're new to the sport or a kid, heck, a 3 pounder is a lunker! I took my nephew fishing for the FIRST time in his life the other day and he caught one that was 2 pounds...............I CHALLENGE ANY MAN ON THIS BOARD TO CONVINCE HIM THAT THAT WAS NOT A LUNKER!!! HE'S STILL BRAGGIN ABOUT IT!!!!! When I finally chase bass in Mexico at one of the ultimate lakes............gonna have to be a 9 pounder or 10 pounder before I'll silly like a kid excited. My day is coming........my day is coming!

Depends on species as well. A spot of 4 lbs would be a lunker and a smallmouth of 5 would be a lunker, at least down here. Just my thoughts. Black bass LMB, 10 is pretty much a lunker anywhere I fish.
Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.
