I talked with one of the TPW biologists recently and they typically don't raise or stock crappie. They may introduce a few on a brand new lake. In fact, there's not that much of a management program for crappie.

I think someone told me that crappie also known as "RAZOR BACK" I believe I know what you are looking for. We caught a lot of thse at Tawokani under 2 miles bridge and Cedar Creek. Also these crappies being caught at White Rock Creek, but they are small.
Kool, once we hit the lake agian we will call you when one is caught.

Crappie are hard to manage from a fisheries standpoint for several reasons. First, other than catching them on a rod and reel, there is no easy way to sample them (i.e. shocking or gill nets). This causes problems because the population cannot be monitored. Secondly, crappie seem to have a "boom or bust" spawning cycle. They either have a lot of fry or no fry at all. This makes it hard to consistently stock them in the lakes. There has been a little research done on how to manage crappie, but nothing solid has come out of it thus far. Maybe one of these days someone will figure it out.
Anyway, if it is a legal crappie to keep, even if it's on the small side, I'll take it. I have plenty of room off exhibit to grow them up a bit before they hit the tank.
Thanks for all the help, folks!

I always thought they were termed lipstick crappie. I've caught my share in Travis.
I've been meaning to try my favorite dock on Travis if I can get to it and there's water under it.
Don't know if you would be willing to drive to Austin to get one though. The rest are gonna drown in peanut oil.
Nice pics Jon_Boy...nice of you to catch one for this post.

Wanda, that sounds like an interesting fish. I'd take a couple if you come across them. I personally like the warmouths. Neat fish.
CrappieCat, you donated most of my crappie anyway, so you know I'll take what you come up with.

I caught a 15.5 inch "sharpie crappie" last week in Sam Rayburn. Wish I could have given it to you live. It would have looked good in your tank.

I did some research a few years ago and this is what I came up with. The crappie ya'll are referring to is possibly a hybrid and they were intoduced to power plants a while back to be able to withstand the hot temps of power plant lakes. This is what the bioligist at TPWD told me and it took awhile to get to the bottom of where the crappie came from. Hopes this helps. GoodLuck CrappieMaster

Ernest Paty carries a Marks A Lot with him and when he releases a fish he marks them, Ernest has been around a long time and fished a lot of lakes.

I have always heard them called Mohawks. I have caught them in nearly every lake I fished for crappie in. I know others will have different experiences, but at Weatherford, Benbrook,. and Lake Worth, it was rare to catch a Mohawk that was 10 inches long.

I caught a few of them a couple of years ago on a trip with Duck_Jerky. We were calling them hybrids back then.
I emailed TPWD and they said that YES there is a hybrid breed and that there is no recorded state ot lake records for them. They told me that if you could produce one it would be a state record on the spot.

Looks like I may do a session with some fellow carpers on CC next weekend (Dec 16-17). Don't know the details of where we'll be yet, but would it be possible to meet up with some of you if you happen to catch any racing stripes on the lake during that time?
