I bought a dowel from home depot, sealed a few times and used a pvc Tee for the handle. Mine is 8ft long they run around 11 bucks.

I can't speak to how well these work but I just ordered one from the link below. Max Gain Systems. I think I found this link off this site somewhere in a post. You have to put them together but you can order the size and color you want. I bought two 4-piece sections with the coupler to make an 8-foot pole I can breakdown and throw in the back of the SUV. I am all about portability (I have all 2-piece rods, etc.). I thought about the park n pole which looks great but I like the idea of breaking this thing down when transporting. I will throw a review up once I get it, put it together and get out on the water. http://www.mgs4u.com/shallow-water-boat-anchors.htm

How shallow? I made a stick from 3/4" schedule 40 PVC. A tee on top and rebar point covered with epoxy, epoxied to the bottom. But on the salt flats I just use an 8# mushroom on a short line. When I get out to stalk a fish I just ease it over, and it's quick & easy to pick up after I trip, fall, spook the fish, and give up..........

I got the 6 foot park n pole for about $50+ as I recall. Certainly more expensive than some diy approaches. Debated on the 6 vs 8 ft poles thinking that the 8 foot length might be more unwieldy. Of course, first time out, decided I shoulda got the 8 foot. I looked at the site above for the shallow-water-boat-anchors but by the time I got all the parts, it would have been significantly more than the park-in-pole. I think that would have included a 6ft and a 2ft piece and connectors to be able to put together different lengths, which in itself would have been an advantage but more expensive.

I recommend the Park-n-Pole from Yakattack; 8 foot version. I thought about making my own, but when I held up the 8' version and saw how light light it was it was an easy decision. I use it some up here, but I mainly use it at the coast for standing and poling the flats or staking out in 3+ ft of water. Actually, at the coast I use a second stake out pole that made from a 1 wood driver with the head cut off. I purchased it from Goodwill for $1. I use that one when I'm sitting down and and want to quietly move across a shallow flat for reds.

can we still buy wooden closet rods by the foot at the hardware stores?just drill a hole if so you could drill a hole in one end and sharpen the other. have also seen guys add JBWeld around the sharpened end. u could also stain it with minwax. think it would be a fun project. home depot link minwax think both mariner sails in dallas and mountain sports in arlington carry factory made ones. a few other DIY ideas. I will take one of those, Don. Unless one is all you have.... I have about 15 poles standing in the corner just need to put them together. Might take 15 minutes. Come on by and I'll fix you up. Next Saturday I'm hauling furniture south so need to do it pretty quick.

I appreciate all the feedback however this is what I have come up with thus far and worked out really well today. I had this in the wood shed out back and it was staring me in the face yesterday. 12' total length when extended, and very strong. 6' in length when retracted. (fiberglass) I drilled out the rivet and the saw head unit slipped right of leaving a nylon tapered tip and ready for use. I am fishing in 8'-8.5' water so the length comes in handy. Here is the 14' available at the home depot for $35.00 http://www.homedepot.com/p/Fiskars-14-ft-Bypass-Pruner-93006966J/100153111Corrosion resistant Sturdy fiberglass pole with quick release extendable pole lock 12' Sturdy fiberglass pole with quick-release lock for easy extension
