I need your input for a new trolling motor for my boat. It will be foot controlled / 24 volt / about 70# thrust. Would you suggest a MK or MG? I am thinking about a MK Maxxum 70 currently.

How big a boat? Do you often fish open water when the wind is 15 mph+? A heavy boat and fishing those conditions might dictate a stronger thrust.

I've had both and prefer MK. I had a Maxxum and loved it. Running a Fortrex now. The MK shafts are not indestructible though. But MG's bend fairly easy. That's the only complaint I had with MG. They all have their troubles if abused and not kept up. IMO.

The boat is a fiberglass Tracker just over 17 feet. It came with a 35# thrust MG in when I got it in 1989, change to a Boris Marine 65# thrust hand control in 2000. Plenty of power but I did not ever like the hand control. Fish mainly on Bob Sandlin.

Go with what you can get the best deal on. I've had both and there isn't enough difference to matter. I've hit plenty stumps with my old MG and never bent the shaft. The MK are composite so they aren't indestructable either. Get the one with the features you want and don't look back.
