Fishing a small, timbered east Texas lake yesterday, it took me a couple of hours to discern any pattern at all. what I finally discovered to be successful was casting a very long, T-rigged worm (10-14") to the outer timber line in 17 feet of water along a creek channel. Then I had to just let the worm sit motionless on the bottom for a full minute before the bass would pick it up. this pattern repeated itself all afternoon for bass up to 4 pounds. I'd never experienced anything quite like that. Just wondering who else has experienced anything like it.

Yea, try it with a weightless fluke. Make a cast - drop your rod, make a phone call, eat a sandwich, drink a coke. Then pick your rod up and twitch, twitch, pause 5 seconds, twitch, twitch pause 5 seconds. Takes lots of patience, but when the bite gets touch it's what you got to do at times. A fluke is the most life like injured bait mimicking lure that there is, and sometimes that is the only way you can get them to bite. 30 seconds is really not long enough to let it sit.

Excellent post phototex. That is the kind of stuff we need to know. It happens more than you know. Most just do not have the patience.

The Fluke is another excellent choice Mr. Welcher. Thanks for sharing guys.

Dead sticking is good when they arent biting well. That is why you will get those bites on backlashes. I read sometimes the bass will see it fall and when it doesnt move they will slowly go over expecting an easy meal with no effort.

A backlash is how I finally figured out what they wanted. I also learned that it is not wise to put the rod down. Even a small bass can pull it out of your boat. (And yes, I did get my rod back by dragging a tailspinner - what a pain - and the bass was still on it!

I remember from Doug Hannon's book to not get mad when you get a backlash--some of the largest bass are caught after a bad backlash. Take advantage of the situation, and just let it sit.
