October 17th – 19th the Mariner Sails Kayak Fishing Club will be hosting a weekend of “Bass on the Fly” at the beautiful Lake Fork Marina.
This will be a joint venture between the MSKFC and "any" member of "any" fly fishing club in the State of Texas.
We will camp, fish, eat, kayak, and just have "tons" of fun. The idea is to create and "information sharing highway" between the fly fishing community and the kayak fishing community so that both can learn from one another. There will be no time schedules or agendas.
There will be the availability to learn how to:
• Cast a fly rod
• Tie flies
• Fish from a kayak (both fly and conventional)
• Rig a kayak for fishing
• Catch bigger and more big bass and bluegills on the fly
• Camp, rest, eat, and relax
You are not required to fly fish or kayak fish to attend this event. Everyone that is a qualified member (as stated above) is welcome. Bring your bass boats, jon boats, float tubes, waders, or your bank fishing shoes and come spend a fun filled weekend with us at Lake Fork.
Lake Fork Marina has tent sites, RV sites, and even a hotel so it’s convenient for everyone.
http://www.lakeforkmarina.com/

PLEASE post any ideas or suggestions you might have that will make this the biggest and best event possible!

The MSKFC meeting will be on October 14th at 6:30 PM at Mariner Sails.
Russell Husted (President of the Texas Council IFFF) and Jeff Jackson (TFO Fly Rods) will be our guest speakers. We will discuss the final details of the GTG at the meeting also.

Wow Jerry!

This sounds like a great opportunity for all types of folks to get together and exchange techniques and ideas! Good job in getting so many different organizations and types of fisherfolk involved.

Nice lineup for the meeting too. Mariner will host snacks and beverages for the meeting and will have some demo kayaks available for the weekend event for those who don't have a yak and want to give it a try.

Thanks again for thinking out of the box on this stuff!

Aris

Thanks, Aris. The event is growing as is the meeting. We now have at least 3 fly fishing professionals coming to be a part of our fireside chat/information session. Ken Morrow is also joining us. Ken Morrow is a Certified Adaptive Fly Fishing Practitioner and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Angler Educator who serves as the President of the Adaptive Fly Fishing Institute, Inc. With over three decades of fishing and paddle sports experience, Ken specializes in fly fishing instruction and opportunities for people with disabilities. The adaptive sports philosophy of helping participants to achieve their highest level of independent function without compromising safety drives Ken’s approach.

More to come, stay tuned!

BTW, now is a good time to make reservations with the marina as they will fill up quickly.

I'll be at the club meeting on the 14th. I've got a new book out on how to target big bass on the fly that is specific to East Texas. I grew up here and have fly-fished these lakes all of my life, including Fork (but predating its existence by a good margin). The name of the book is Bucketmouth: Fly-Fishing for Trophy Bass. It's 275 pages of "what works best for me" for Largemouth, Whites, Stripers, and Hybrids. The first couple of chapters deal with East Texas lakes and streams and how to select the right ones and the best parts of them for finding BIG bass in shallow enough water to fly-fish. Then I go through tackle, boats, flies, and tactics. There's even an epilogue dealing with what to modify for tournament fishing and lots of pictures and graphics to illustrate the concepts, structure, cover, and tactics.

I'll have paperbacks with me at the meeting and at the outing. I'll autograph books for $15 each ($4.50 off cover price). I'm thinkin' that way folks can read the book before the outing, and we can discuss it at the lake.

Rumor has it that the marina is booked for the weekend already.
If you plan on coming you might check with them and book a spot (if they have any left).

The meeting last night was a great success and our guest speakers were VERY good. Thanks to Russell and Ken for a great program. This weekend will be a great opportunity to pry lots of great experience and techniques from these wonderful ambassadors of fly fishing. And I learned something last night, lots of fly fishing strategy is just plain FISHING strategy, with any kind of equipment. Fish fry, beautiful weekend, campfires and nice folks.......it could be worse......a LOT worse! wink

Yup! Fishing is fishing, because it's mostly predicated on fish behavior and environmental factors, not type of tackle. Most of the knowledge transfers easily from one type of tackle to another. HOW TO USE the different types of tackle to execute the strategies/tactics differs considerably. In the end, all fishing is about: a) where are the fish, and b) how do I get them to bite this hook?
