Fished Wed afternoon for 2 hours and yesterday from 8:30 to 2:00 pm...Only my third trip to fish Calcasieu but far and away the best. Tuesday we caught lots of sand trout and a limit of GOOD specks. Caught a couple flounders too.
The best was the redfish we caught yesterday. Winds were pretty strong yesterday morning (at least for our boat) so we went to sheltered side of an island and fished for reds in 2-4 feet of water (at high tide)...We caught a limit of reds. The best part was when my buddy was fighting a bull red on one side of the 14 ft. flatbottom boat and I was fighting a bull red on the other side...and there was another boat with 53guys getting to watch the whole show!...We landed a 28 and a 29.5 and kept them...THEN, we later had to release my 31 inch and his 33 inch because we already had our one bull limits! All were caught on live shrimp under popping corks.
After that, we went to the marshes on west side of Joe's cove looking for flounder and found some really good specks and caught a limit along with small red, drums, croakers and other species. This was on live (and later fresh dead) shrimp fished on 1/4 oz. jigheads on the outgoing tide.
I took Gulp new penny shrimp to try my hand with artificials. I caught a good number of sand and a few speckled trout Tuesday afternoon and a couple flounder but never got a red on the artificials.
Also, I had asked about the H20 Mettle reel in saltwater and i can report it performed flawlessly anfd had no trouble with those bull reds.
