Had good luck with thermacell

Until getting sick I worked in Mosquito control for almost 20 years and here is what I used to suggest.
First thing is to check out the CDC site, they are usually up to date on mosquito protection, vectored diseases, and the like.
Deet and Picaridin are the two "best" repellents there are a couple of others that are suggested but don't work as well as these. Add to that treating your clothes with Permethrin and allowing to dry before going out in them adds to your protection.
Thermo Cell technology works well IF you have little to no wind.
Personal fans don't work as well as a larger fan that blows across the area you are in. I have saved many a back yard party with the addition of a few box fans blowing the air around. Keep in mind that some more aggressive species can fly in very high winds.
Loose Long sleeves and pants that can be buttoned or sealed tightly around the sleeves and ankles, socks and closed shoes, even mosquito head nets might not be pretty but do work very well protecting you. Light colors seem to attract more than darker colored items. At night, keep lighting away from where people are at, they will draw bugs. Only use a head lamp when necessary or try one that has a colored lense, it will still attract, but not as intensely.

Interesting useless piece of information, mosquitos generally fly up when they take off, so if one lands on you and you brush or scare them off they will fly up under the brim of your hat. At night it is better to wear a head band, scarf or whatever than a brimmed hat, except when using a head net, then the brim should be wide and go all around your head effectively keeping the net away from your skin and increasing it's effectiveness.

If in a boat, stay away from shore line, mosquitos will not fly long distances across open water, they are too vulnerable to predators. The distance away depends on your location and the species of bugs that are out at the time.

Care should be taken with Citronella, in some areas mosquitos have been documented as using it as an attractor instead of a repellent because of the years of use by humans. Also not all citronella items are equal, some work, some don't depending on manufacturer and product, I guess it has to do with the amount and type of scent added, but not sure.

Also stay away from colognes. Sweet smelling additives when washing clothes, can help with the attraction of bugs.
