Was on a buddies sailboat in clearlake tx just floating around with the family when I decided to throw the line out "chopped mullet" for bait. After about 10 min my line begins to drag so I set the hook, well this beast is really getting it, no signs of it letting me pull it up. I have been fishing off and on for years and the only fish that ever pulled this hard was offshore amberjack, red snapper tuna etc. So after 20 min chasing this beast around the lake he was showing no signs of tiring out so we continued and just as was about 5ft from the boat it gave me one last pull and this time he went under the boat and SNAP! Worst feeling ever! The line busted I'm guessing the corral from under the boat cut the line. Well my question here is what could that have possibly have been? Never really fished that area so not sure what it could have been, any body know of anybody catching something that big in the this lake? It' was in the middle of the lake behind Cabo's bar and grill Btw I was using 20lbs test line

First of all To the Texas Fishing Forum. Glad to have you on board. Side Note: As for what type of fish broke off is anyone's guess. I assume since you were on a lake (fresh water) It could have been a Big Catfish such as a Flathead or Blue. If it was on salt water it could be a number of fish!

That is saltwater there and it's hard to say what you had on but... If it kept going to the bottom and felt like a snag at times then it would most likely be a good sized stingray. If it was making runs and pulling hard it may have been a big redfish. It's that time of year for those. Maybe a large Black Drum ?? That's the beauty of fishing the saltwater, you just never know for sure until you get your eyes on it. Either way I'm sure it was a lot of fun !

in that area, i would guess a big black drum or sting ray. neither of them move very fast, just a strong steady unrelenting pull.

Doesn't matter what it was, if I lost it I would call it a huge shark, even if it was from a swimming pool. LOL.
