I've never fished a shaky head, but after seeing them referenced over and over on this board, I figured I need to give it a shot. My question for the TFFers out there is, what brand jig head (and hook size) and what brand shaky worm should I go throw in order to get good results? I guess I need one that floats and is real responsive in stained water here on Lake Grapevine. Ran across this video that looks pretty good: You Tube Shakyhead Video Scott

One thing that I learned when I started using them several years ago is use the ones with the wire twist on it. The first shaky heads I bought were the spot removers with the spike thing you stick in the worm. The worm does not stay on it worth a carp unless you super glue it and even then it is questionable, especially after you catch a fish on it I like to use the big bites that doug r mentioned

Agree but once you bend that hook once, toss it. I thought the shorter shank would make it a little tougher. Negative. I like Owners. I am qualified to speak on this topic because I hang up a lot and have to pull them free.

Some great advice coming in!
What size jig would you use for most bass fishing situations? 1/8? 1/6? 3/16?, 1/4? Etc.?

Shakey head fishing is not rocket science.. Its just a different hook setup of a Texas rig worm. The jig makes the worm stand up and depending on the jig used its either almost vertical or at a 45 degree angle. A floating worm really makes the action of the presentation. I fish it just like a texas rig with good results. I like a Zoom Utail in Motoroil Chartruese.. very sexy in the water. Roboworms are great shakey head baits too. good luck

A fellow TFFer makes the very best shakeyheads I have ever used. They are footballs, and he will put whatever hooks ya want on them. Look up lvillelrat. You wont be dissapointed. Good price too.I Got some 3 and 4 ought hooks. My advice for a first timer is fish slow. I like non floating worm with a 10 second pause. Watching the worms I use, they stand for 8 or 9 seconds, then wobble over or just fall over. I catch many fish that fallow it, and dont take it until that last little fall. I use this technique from the boat, or when fishing down hill. If bank fishing, or fishing up hill, you will want a floating worm, because the jig will likely fall over and you will not get the best results. I catch alot less from the bank with shaky heads, and I use them often from boat and bank. Lewisville is a great shaky head lake, and I would guess Grapevine is too. From the store I buy owners, but the wire hooks do bend. They have a better look in the swimming pool though. I also use the smallest weight that will hold up the bait, and still get your depth. More about holding the bait up though.
