How do you guys fish brush piles? I have a trolling motor but it is not foot controlled its hand guided. I can't seem to position my self correctly over brush piles! ! For the guys who do not have a 1000+ Trolling motor how do y'all do it? Do y'all anchor down or what man its tough! Thanks

Personally I drop a marker and stay as close with my troll motor as I can. It is remote controlled now but it wasn't always. Anchoring can be done but if you are in water over 25 ft it is hard to stay close due to wind shift. A good TM that will keep you on the spot will coast close to 2000.00
Randy I'm in good shape for the shape I'm in!

A good TM that will keep you on the spot will coast close to 2000.00 Mine does fine, and I got it on clearance for $299. I did do about $400 in repair work after I fried a wire and cracked the housing, but my fault. I throw a marker buoy and stay close. If the wind is blowing much, you drift away some when you catch a fish, or have to retye, but I never, or at least very rarely use an anchor. I like to move around and get my jigs in front of as many fish as possible.

I too have a hand control trolling motor. I can stay on spot with no issues. As stated I too toss out a buoy marker (up wind) as a reference point and stay on point no problem.

If it's too windy just try a different brush pile. But a good trolling motor makes all the difference when your crappie fishing.
I never anchor on anything I'm fishing.

No one stays exactly in one spot when fishing piles. Everyone drifts around. I used the markers as a visual point to see how far I am drifting. I myself will throw at least two markers out and try to get them out past the edges of the pile because I like fishing the outside edges first and always have my boat facing the wind. That way by the time I finish fishing the edges the markers will have walked enough to show me the very edge of the pile. Everyone gets hung up on piles. I always fish with braid and a 1/8 oz jig. The 1/8 oz let's me feel the branches easier and the braid let's me keep more jigs. It just takes time getting use to fishing piles. I think everyone does it a bit different and there's no one way to fish them. Just gonna have to find what works for you. I will say that if you can't control your boat with the trolling motor you have, then anchoring may be your best option. One more thing, don't give up trying to find what works for you. I know it can get frustrating at times. Good luck.

If you do have to anchor, position your boat well upwind of the brush pile, drop your anchor, let your boat drift to the brush pile and then tie off. Use lots of anchor rope. If you drop anchor at the brush pile you'll likely spook the fish. Been there, done that. Just a tip. Good fishin!

I typically find the pile and mark it if I am so lucky ..... then from there its a fight to the finish if its windy ... don't have one set of rules for every situation in my boat i will try multiple ways to hold on or near the marker a big heavy boat helps bunches though ...

I find the pile and pitch my marker Drive back over and scan to make sure It was a successful pitch .. As tex boxer Mentioned there really is no right Or wrong way to fish it .. You have to Figure out what works that day on piles And works for you . Sometimes they want It on the pitch a certain color etc . I as well have better luck on fishing the Edges and I'm steadily working my troller motor As I've got the nose face ing the wind .. A 3 to 5 mph wind or so SOUTH wind seems to produce A lot of fish on the lakes I'm fishing .. Now I will fish the middle of pile before I leave It just to make sure I didn't leave anything that Is willing to bite . A Berkeley chart crappie nibblet Is always pushed up on my hook .. This time Of year that is .. In the spring I don't have time To put em on as they are way to aggressive To need them .. One of the most important Things is having a good graph on front of boat To see your pile etc your fishing .. I use a foot Pedal motor guide and it works for me . If it's too windy I don't care what trolling motor You have it's not worth the fight in my opinion .. Again try different stuff till you find what works for You . Take a friend with ya and I promise one Of you will figure out what they want by trying Different presentations ..

NEVER ANCHOR!!! You stand a good chance of spooking the fish and tearing up the brush when you pull it up. Was with a guide one day and he saw someone anchored on one of his piles and drove over and tore him a new one. It was HILARIOUS!!!

Lack of properly knowing how and where to anchor is what causes the problem!!! A good Capt. would anchor his boat without the fish on the pile ever knowimg he was there and never disrupt the pile.Seen it done ,Done it!!

Well if you drop an anchor right on the brush pile you might disrupt the fishing, and destroy the pile if you are lucky enough to haul it in. Fishbonz hit it on the head!
I don't anchor unless it is absolutely necessary and depending on water depth never any closer than 60 ft from where I want to fish. I have used an anchor and a troll motor to keep me where I want to be, when wind is shifty

Not sure what type of boat you have but you can get a nice foot controlled Trolling motor for much less than 1k. It makes it much easier to stay above a brush pile hands free and fish on. I never anchor but sometimes i will tie up to some timber if the fishing is good. Bought a Minn Kota edge 55 foot controlled tm to replace my old one today from David at Shut up and fish for a good price. Find what you need and contact him.
