The first problem is the partially frozen turkey. The turkey has to be completely thawed and ideally at room temp before it goes in the pot. Second, if they were using peanut oil instead of vegetable oil they wouldn't have the fire issues.

When in doubt, set the hook.

I can't find it anywhere, but the wife heard on the news a couple of days ago that someone in Montgomery Co. burned their trailer house down when the turkey fryer boiled over.....in the kitchen of the trailer!

My brother does a Turkey once in a while his set-up. He is always very careful and they come out really nice. Still, it kinda scares me a little. I always stand at a distance with the fire extinguisher aimed at it.
I like the flavor, but prefer to smoke a bird or get one from Greenberg. Support the local business and all. But, has anyone ever tried to just fry the different parts, legs, wings.. just like you would Chicken? It may be that the parts are just too big for a stove top.

confused

Someone recommended filling the cooker with water, insert the bird in its wrapper, and adjust the amount of water to a safe level. Take the wrapped bird out of the water and mark a fill to line on your cooker. I think putting too much oil in the fryers is the biggest safety issue. Like someone said you want the bird to be completely thawed and dried very well. If there is too much moisture on the bird it is going to make the oil bubble and spatter more when you put it in the hot oil.

Whoever was cooking the turkey in a turkey fryer inside their mobil home is a Darwin Award candidate.

I always, well NOT the first time.. unfortunately..
get the "thawed" bird ready for frying, (remove all the innards, neck etc). put the bird in the fry cooker, fill with water, till the bird is covered... remove the bird, THEN, mark your oil level. pour out water dry cooker as water and hot oil dont mix well. You should not have any problems..
