So, in Canada last week (NOT the ideal place for this to happen), I had my Motor Guide, Pro Series 75 lb thrust trolling motor steering cable snap. It's a foot control, 24 volt system. 24 years of owning bass boats, this was a first. But, being in the middle of nowhere and having two days to fish, I tried fixing it! smile Didn't go well. frown In that process, we ended up cutting the cable with a hacksaw to try and make my homemade sleeve and cable idea work. Well, now I'm home and the only motor guide repair shop around town had less than excellent service when I called today. They said they have no way of knowing what cable length I need if I've cut anything off my cable. I think I only cut 2-3 inches off of the black sleeve, but just can't remember. Can ANYONE tell me how I can know I'm ordering the right length?

The original cable has the following numbers on the black outer sleeve - MAP027-01 08111. Does that tell anyone anything? Also, when you buy a new one, does it come with that 5 inch or so long gear bar on the end that goes into the head?? It looks like it's part of the cable I took off.

It took me about 5 minutes and 6 screws to easily remove the cable from the trolling motor. I wanted to just take my boat up to them and have them replace it, but they're telling me that they will charge me another $50 if I don't remove the entire trolling motor from the boat. That's INSANE. So, I'm doing it myself. But, just want to try and get ahead of this trip I'm making to get a new one and see if I can find out for sure if I need the 63 inch or the 69 inch one?? Hoping that part number tells somebody something. I'm pretty sure I just need the 63 inch, but I don't know if that measurement is for the black sleeve only or should I be measuring from the end of the gear bar at the motor end and the end of the threaded screw bar at the foot control end??

I really appreciate anyone's help here. And, if anyone has any "make sure you do this" comments for putting the new one on and trying to make it all work right again, I'd really appreciate it.

Mine broke several months ago. I don't remember if that was the model number but I replaced mine myself and it was pretty easy. I just had to cut the outside covering of the wire bundle going from the pedal to the head of the trolling motor because the new one would hang up when I was pulling it through. the one thing I messed up on mine is there is a rubber stop on the pedal end that you have to make sure it is in properly so it holds everything in place

I replaced mine myself with no problem. It is a motor guide. The way I determined what size cable to use was, I brought the cable with me to the shop. I believe that is about the only way to know--you have to measure the cable. I also had the part number but was still not sure. Call the folks at Boris Marine Electronics, super friendly and very knowledgeable. Boris Marine Electronics, 817-624-3932, in Fort Worth. They should be able to tell you exactly what you need. The gear does not come with the cable, it screws off. The cable is threaded, at least that is how it worked on mine. Good luck.

Thanks guys!!! Found my part number on good old google and it's the 63 inch. And thanks WAgonwheel.........that was it........it screwed off. I hadn't realized it was threaded on there. MAN was it screwed in tight! But, I'll get the new cable soon and put it all back together.

Am I right that when I set it all back up, that I just want to have the motor head pointing forward, the footcontrol flat and, when set that way, the gears lined up basically in the middle of that 5 inch gear bar on the end of the cable in the head of the motor?? Seems logical, so it can have a couple inches of turning each way.
