What makes a good float rod. Karl, Zach, got any recommendations? Not that I have any cash now but I'm starting to look at em. Just in case. Tax time IS right around the corner!

SSF, I mainly fished wit the Drennan range of float rods in the UK 13ft Waggler rod, the absolute Dogs Danglers mate.

I also had a couple of Milo 13 ft as well nice piece of kit.

Again it's down to your own preferance, I like light but sterdy, in other words I like it light but with some guts.

Zack, pick us some of those up, I'll pay you back for mine.

Mark - In my ( Mostly inexperienced ) opinion, you do not need anything special for a float rod. All the float fishing we are doing is real close to shore, just short, easy casts.

I don't see any reason at all to use a long, Euro style rod for float fishing. The only exception might be if you intend on catching 30-40lb commons on the float frequently, and the only reason you'd want one then would be to balance out the big-pit reel you'd want to handle the runs of a carp that size.

I've float fished successfully with Zack several times now, and have seen fish up to about 15lbs taken this way. Even Zack is just using a small reel and a regular rod, I think a 7', fairly light action.

I actually am using one of my smallest, lightest rod, my Shimano Stradic reel on a 6.5' Lightening Rod.

my rod is a 9' float rod from TFO about $130...free spirt makes some nice ones in the $150 range as well dose fox I think they call there's the specialist. I have a 13'6" Okuma float rod that is Really! light I would sell for really really cheap. if your intrested.

Zack, honestly, why the need for a 13' Float rod given the way we're fishing?

Or is that for Towne Lake float fishing lol.

I am not sure why you would want a 13' 6" float rod I know you can cast very light weights with it a good distance I guess thats why I would sell it so cheap.

I could see wanting a longer rod for the rivers. though if you're stalking it will just get in the way.

I used to have a 13' float rod, but left it in Ireland when I moved here. It was great at casting light tackle a long distance, would typically fish slow moving water, at depths around 8 to 10' using 4# line, size 18 to 24 hooks and about a total of 3 bb weights - could throw all that about 50 yards. Then just let the bait hang above or bounce along the bottom through a long drift waiting for that little red tip to start bouncing around, and disappear under the water... mmmm, fun times.
