So if your walking in a parking lot and you find a $ 20.00 bill laying on the ground, and you pick it up and put it in your pocket then thats stealing too? I call bunk!!

+1 Sooo,if someone picked them up with the intention of trying to find the owner; is that stealing until he finds the owner????

I think Tony meant to post this here:

If you think about it, anyone could steal anything they could get their hands on and claim they "just found it" if the law was any different.

If I was the next person at the boat ramp and ran over the property that was left behind with my vehicle could I be charged with destruction of property?

OUCH
Sounds like something I'd forget do and forget about bang

Do all the things listed above, report loss to proper authorities, post in the bass section, put up signs at the ramp offering reward, etc.
If you have full coverage on your boat and home, make a loss report on both. If something is able to be simply detached from your boat, it is considered Cov B, personal property, and thus covered by your homeowners policy. A lot of people will not file a claim afraid that the insurance company will raise their premiums. If they do, shop for another insurance company!!!!!

GOOD LUCK!

MY wife would never let me live that one down, even though I want to upgrade! She'd make me find depths with a string and rock wife

I do hope you have insurance but it doesn't read as if you do.

Agree totally. If it does not belong to you then turn it into the nearest authorities if you find it.

I found $200 in tens and twentys a few years back at a local flea market. I turned it into the flea market office, where they took my phone number. The money was not mine to put into my pocket and I hoped whoever lost it would check at the flea market office.

I was surprised when I received a call from the flea market two months later, asking I come to pick up the money. They stated nine people had claimed they had lost it but none of them could tell them the number of twenty's and ten's that made up the $200. ( I had them give the money to a minister that held Sunday services at the flea market for vendors.)

Sorry, but in my opinion, if you keep something that does not belong to you and you don't turn it into the authorities, it is stealing. Just my opinion, of course.

And last month, while I was at a local store with my five year old grandson, he found 75cents on the floor. He give it to me, asking me to find who lost it. So we took it to the cashier and give it to her to put in the register. Makes me proud of my daughter, bringing him up to realize at his young age that if it does not belong to you, you don't keep it.

My nephew called me a couple of years ago while he was at New Braunfels. He had found an almost new Buell motorcycle in the river. It still had the keys in the ignition switch. It was approx. 8' underwater and they had fished it out.
He asked me what he should do??? I promptly told him to call the police! Seems somebody found it sitting somewhere with the keys in it, took it for a joy ride and then ditched it in the river. I explained that even if he didn't get caught with it, how would he feel if somebody had stole some of his property and then somebody else found it, but made no effort to return it to him. thumb

I hope somebody returns your equipment!

Yes, this is absolutely theft. The proper procedure is to turn it into the police and if nobody claims it within their time frame then it's yours. But to just put it in your pocked and not say anything is theft, no question about it.
