So i got a 6wt fly rod combo a few months ago. I have never used a fly rod before. When you started how did you get motivated? My problem seems to be i cant turn down biting catfish for something i am likley to not catch fish. I would love to learn how but every time i go fishing i think...fly rod or big catfish and catfish seems to always win.

I have not been fly fishing long but once I started it is all I take.
Personally I think it is pretty cool that you throw out a fly and never know what is going to take it. Bluegills, Bass, Catfish, ect might all hit the same fly

I agree it sounds super exciting to catch a catfish on the fly. I bet once i get my first catch on the fly it will change. I will bring it if i go on sunday. See what happens.

I almost always catch a Catfish or 2 when I go flyfishing for Bass and Perch in the summer on our Central Texas Rivers. I fished the Guadalupe yesterday a few hours and caught a 2lb Channel Catfish along with Guadalupe Bass, Smallmouth Bass and Perch. I caught most of them using a #12 Dave's Red Squirrel Rubber Legs.

Tell yourself you're going to go catch bait for cats! Leave they cast net at home so you can't go catfishing until you catch some bait!!

For me, taking a casting lesson made a significant improvement in both my fly fishing success and enjoyment. Come up to Eisenhower state park Sat morning, 9-27, and you can get some casting help and talk to other experienced fly fishers. Then you can fish Lake Texoma after. It is a free event.

Fishing for big cats is for the "meat" . Fly fishing is kind like for the joy of outdoors.

Christian, listen to Rex and get a lesson. But one way to get hooked is to go to Walmart and purchase some of those small top water poppers. Tie on the chartreuse one and go fishing in some small ponds with Bass and Bluegill in the early morning. You will catch a bunch of bluegill and small bass. It will get you hooked!!!

Any of the suggestions sound familiar?
(except johnboy and his don't count)

We have the MSKFC fly camp Oct 17-19 at Lake Fork also.
There will be "lots" of folks there to help teach casting and tactics to catch big bass (and cats) on the fly.

We may find some time at that function to do a little casting practice. Bring your rod.
