Just got my 1st spool of braid - didn't have stuff like this before my +30-year fishing hiatus. Spiderwire FWIW, my only choice from what the local Walmart stocks. Are all braid lines "waxy" like this? I can't tell, but is it just the way the line feels or does it actually have some kind of waxy coating on it? The line had a small gummed patch to keep it from unraveling on the spool. When I took the patch off most of the stickum stayed on the line. How do I get it off? Rubbing with cotton flannel only seems to thin it out and spread it around.

Most all braids have a coating. It contains the coloring agent and other things.
Try a bit of rubbing alcohol to remove the sticky stuff.
Did you put some mono under it or some tape on the spool?
Be careful with the knots you use. Some/many old standards don't work well with braid.

When I tie braids, especially when new, I don't lube the knot, it will then heat up that lubricant and help the knot to hold.
If it isn't a braid ready spool, you need to either tie a few feet of mono on, then tie the braid to it and fill the spool (position this knot on the edge of the spool), or wrap the bottom of the spool with tape. I like to use electrical tape, it seems to be less messy. Like mentioned earlier, if not, the whole thing will slip on the spool after a while acting like the drag isn't working. For braid to hold onto a surface, it has to dig into something, the tape is something it can cut into.
Also spool it on as tightly as you can possibly get it, it will help with keeping it from digging into the spool. Use a little lighter drag also, that helps.
If you direct tie leaders on, a double uni knot will cut through mono, but will work well on Fluorocarbon. I use an Albright or one of it's derivatives, or the Slim Beauty knot, they work well with all leaders.
If you run into problems, your best bet is to take it to a place where you have enough room, tie the line to a tree and walk it off of the spool, then max the drag on the reel, reel it in using the drag on the reel to pull you along, this will rewind the reel quite tightly.

FWIW, it's 30# test. Up to now I've only used mono (my former dammyankee flyfishing excepted). I stripped about half the mono off the reel, tied the braid to the mono backing with a double uni per the fishing knots website I referenced that said that was the 'best' for that purpose, then filled up the spool. I guesstimate I've got 80-100 yards braid on the reel, with 1/2 to 2/3 that 14# test mono backing.

"a double uni knot will cut through mono" That is false. The uni-knot goes AROUND the other line with the knots butting against each other, so it is impossible to cut the other line. You can slide the knots apart if you want aince they do not cross each other. The uni-uni knot is the only one I use to attach lines together.
