Go to Mi Tierra's in the old market. It's a great old, nostalgic place. Awesome margaritas!!

Ranger66's suggestion is excellent, and probably the best known Mexican restaurant in downtown San Antonio. Here are some other options you may consider trying while in town: El Jarro de Arturo, 13421 San Pedro (US281 at Bitters); LA FOGATA, 2427 Vance Jackson; or Tomatillos Cafe Y Cantina, 3210 Broadway. San Antonians are fortunate to have numerous choices of very good Mexican restaurants. ENJOY!!

Ranger66 is on the right track. Mi Tierra is great!!! Also recommend La Margarita which is owned by the same family. Best Cabrito in Texas!!

well known is an understatement. before i moved to boston i lived in dallas and went to mi tierra's at least once a year ever since i can remember. one day i'm at work (in boston, mind you) and we pass by a little place called mi tierra's and the guy next to me say's, "there's the best mexican food place in san antonio named mi tierra." i just grinned and said, "oh, really." about a couple of months later i walk in on the same guy and another coworker talking about mi tierra's. i decide to let it be known that i've been there so many times. it turns out that one lived in austin for a year and would drive down to san antonio to go there on the weekends. the other one had never been there but had seen it on a restaurant review show on the food network. go figure.

I went to Mi Tierras last year. I wasnt impressed. However, if you drink enough margaritas, you will probably get over the mediocre food.

Scr*w Mi Tierra. It's an overpriced tourist trap.
Instead, try these:

"Janitzios" @ the corner of Walzem and Austin Hwy.

One of two "Salsalitos" locations.

"Jacala" on West Ave.

"La Fonda" on Main.

As for hole-in-the-walls, there are too many to mention. Try making a game of it. Pick one at random as you drive by, go in, and try them.

Edit: Alright, I'll mention one holeinthewall...
Little Fish Factory on W.W.White Road.
Breakfast...
Mexican...
Seafood... they do it all. And it's mighty good.

We have eaten in the ones in Houston and Austin and they were both great.

I agree with Beer Snob Mi Tierras is not the greatest, you pay for the location, not the quality of food. I would just eat there in the Mercado, some of the best Gorditas I have tasted, washed down with a nice Dos XX or Margarita. And finish it off with a funnel cake,or two if you are like me wink If you want a restaurant,I would recommend Rosario's. Dang good ritas and the food is priced well and really good. If you catch it on a friday or sat it will be packed, only bad thing, turns into like a mini disco at night. What I like most were the tortillas, think they are homemade,AWESOME. And I'm brown so i know my stuff lol.

I've gotta agree with Jacala. I grew up in Uvalde, and we ate at Jacala very often. Last time I was in SA I went to Tomatillos. Pretty good food there too.

Here are my two cents from a mexican,

A good place for mexican food in sanantonio is TACO TOTE off
I-10 and Wuzbach. The best fajita, chicken fajita, bean & cheese, quesadilla, breakfast tacos you can find. You gotta try, you will know it is good because it is full of people like me(MEXICANS). Plus the have an awesome salsa bar.

Well I went to San Antonio this past week. Mi Tierra is not only a tourist trap, but they are making repairs in the area where they usually have live bands and food. Alot of construction. The food was good, but it is true, it is overated. I did find a place called El Rodeo Taqueria off I-10 and Wurzach and the food was great. Had some County Line on the River Walk and the that was pretty good. And a steak at Outback. Overall I enjoyed the great food in San Antonio and can't wait to go back next year. The paper there made alot of headlines about the new Toyota factory that opened. Good for the people of San Antonio since it has provided alot of jobs for them.

Just wanted to comment on The Outback. If you EVER have a chance to try their swordfish (they may not always have it available), GET IT!!! I didn't know fish could taste so delicious!!! I get that every chance I can. The trick is to get there early so they take their time with your food. Just thought I would make that suggestion. Steven
