I haven't been in October but I bet the bull red run will be in full swing. Best trip I have had for surf fishing was last Thanksgiving. Caught reds and black drum. Good luck to ya!

I usually head down to Rockport in late October and again in mid-November and the wife and I usually Have no problem limiting out on Reds, Black Drum and catch more Specs than I can count. Those are my favorite months down there.

Oct/Nov are good months. Should be lot's of reds around, including the bulls. Water temps will be down a bit and if you catch calm winds and low surf the pier, the jetties will be good for smacks and pomps and occasionally kings if you are fishing for them. Good trout fishing off the pier at night too. The big girls favor live mullet or croaker cos the perch will tear up live shrimp.

We usually go in first or mid oct. we usually do real good on the bulls off Bon hall and Horace Caldwell , and also the south jetty on horse mullet and piggy perch. We fish the channel at the jetty at the end of a falling tide and the surf side on incoming tide. Last year we ran into a load of vamillian snapper (great eating)and we caught to many Spanish macs to count on 1/4 and 1/2 ounce gold or silver spoons. Hooked into a king at the end of the jetty at sun rise one morning ; broke off on the rocks. But it is really good in oct. a little chilly at night but comfortable in the day We are going this year in mid sept I don't know what to expect because it is our first year going in sept. Are the reds in the surf like they are in oct?and will they hit topwater in the surf. Just thought I would share how we do in oct. does anyone know about sept. And oh yeah if you want to keep flounder you can only keep 2 instead of 5 (oct-dec) hope this helps WoodyRed

BTW the 2 flounder limit has been extended 2 weeks into December. Sucks!

So cuda can you tell me what to expect when we go in mid sept. And yeah that sucks about the flounder limit. We usually catch the heck out of the flounder in October. Hope we do the same this year. I know there is a front headed down. It should be there by the weekend. Highs in the 70's predicted here Friday. Do you think that will kick off the reds to running. Thanks for the flounder info. Much appreciated WoodyRed

Depends on what bait you want. Squid, shrimp. Live/dead. Mullet..because most stripes in port a sell frozen squid. Which we use to catch piggy perch or croaker. Or you can buy chicken necks from wal-mart and catch crab and crack them in half for reds and drum. The bait is there,we just usually catch it in the surf with cast nets. Or catch it with are small rods. Hope this helps WoodyRed

Not sure if they are 24hrs but Port A Outfitters and the charter docks are open pretty late and early. We've caught a lot of red in October before. We've seen huge schools of bulls on the pier in Sept-Oct and also on other occasions, slot sized fish busting up bait around the pilings. You'll catch them pretty much anytime though if you know how to catch them around the pier. Trick is live finger mullet and medium heavy gear around the pilings. They hang out in the mornings around the 2nd gut. Should be plenty of pompanos and smacks to occupy your time though.

Thank you cuda. Do you catch the Pomps generally the same as the specs and reds. We caught an African pomp when we were out on a snapper trip. But never any off the pier that is regular pomp. Never even seen anyone bring one in. I've heard they are strong fighters. Would love to find out. Will they hit topwater?

They take live shrimp readily and small bucktail lures. They are fun to catch and good eating. We catch them almost the same way we catch Smacks. Check out my fishing blog for some tips on Port A fishing: http://cudakilla.blog.com/If you are there and the water is clear and calm.. you will almost certainly see me on the pier.

That is a lot of good info. I really appreciate you sharing that with me. Great pictures, and very informative. We have always wanted to land a king at the jetty ,but weren't experienced enough to get it done. Have fished live piggies on bottom but never on bobber. Can't wait to try out the smack rig you talked about. I know what you mean about them cutting you off. I have lost tons of spoons due to smacks teeth even with a black steel leader. Going to try top water this year and I guess I will use a longer leader. 60lb I hope that won't effect the walk the dog action. But thanks to you I'm going to be a little ahead of the curve this year. Thanks a lot cuda. Hope to see you down there sept 18-27 happy fishing WoodyRed
