What do you use while fishing for gar and how long do you let them run before setting the hook?

cut carp/buffalo is the gar candy of choice..im using a big 200 pound swivel, three feet of 104 pound single strand wire and a size 4 mustad treble hook made of bronze..
as for how long you let them run, it depends on the size of bait and the size gr that pics it up, i have been using smaller chunks(look at the second video) and the gar can get them down faster.. basically to keep it simple.... let the gar run (usually down stream) let him stop (he is eating the bait) let him start running again (set the hook)
we he is running initially you will have a very hard time getting a hook through its mouth..
the big gar will take more line on the first run, sometimes several hundred yards before stopping to eat in my experience..
i wouldnt fish for them with less than 40 pound mono or 65 pound braid..personally i am using 80 and 100 pound braid, and may go bigger in the future..thats just what i have on my offshore gear im using..

I went for alligator gar in my yak once on the lower Nueces. Caught a 4-5 footer and when yak side it launched and ended up in my lap. Those teeth thrashing around in your lap will make any guy cringe. Lucky to have rolled it back off my lap and into the water before any bloodshed.
