JE you can catch some nice ones at Ray Hubbard Harbor Bay Marina. Get in your tube and fish around the slips. I catch them on a 1/32 oz jighead with a piece of red worm. Good luck and if you decide to come that way PM me and I will meet you out there.

This thread actually got me interested in getting back out to East Texas private waters and the relaxed atmosphere. I just booked a two-night stay at Bluegill Lake Cabins for Labor Day weekend. Here's the cabin where we'll be staying, and some pics. of the ponds. Looking forward to introducing my kids to catchin' a whole mess load of those little fierce fighters. Fun fishin' for sure! Scott in Flower Mound We just got back from a 2-night stay in that same cabin, and it was sooooooo nice! It has a hot tub on that deck now, next to that little window. And the algae on the water in that second pic is cleared off now. Be sure to get some fish food from the owners and let your kids feed the fish on that dock!

Uncle Jed, thanks for the report! I just called earlier today to confirm our upcoming reservation. Looking forward to it!
Any tips or pointers for our stay? Anything you would have done differently? Planning on bringing some campfire wood and charcoal for the campfire. Flashlights for the kids. Sunscreen, bug spray, etc. What advice would you give us now that you've been there? Should we bring an ice chest with drinks?
Also, how's the fishing? I seem to recall the lady saying pets were okay.
Thanks!

Scott in Flower Mound Bring TWO ice chests...One for the drinks and one for the fish! And bring your dogs,Mine had a blast there! There is also a little row boat there if you want to use it.And the owner,Devon, will bring you some firewood if you want it.You'll need your own charcoal,though...Also,I left some boxes of worms in the fridge for ya! If you will PM me your email address,I'll send you a slide show of the place. also, the dude said that the next pond over from this one had even more fish in it than this one,but I never tried it,cause,well...WHY?

Jed, PM sent. Thanks for the tips! Those look like some nice sized East Texas Bluegill like I remember from my youth. Did you do more than worm fish (jig 'em)? When I used to live out in that neck of the woods, we'd suspend a worm on a small Eagle Claw leader hook about 6-12 inches above a weight, fishing off the bottom and we'd catch them for hours. Looks like I'll need to bring my frying oil and frying pan with me! Scott

I found that a small weight was necessary to get the bait down to the bottom before the smaller fish would hit it.Then I found that they like worms, but they LOVE bacon! By the way, there are NO bait shops anywhere close to there...Even the Walmart in Athens doesn't sell worms! So bring everything with you...those worms I left there were given to me by the owner, cause someone else had left them there, and he will give them to the next person that needs them.

No bait at the Athens Wal-Mart?!? Being so close to the TPW Fisheries Center, that's downright un-American!
Bacon, eh? Thanks for the tip! Will bring the worms and bacon along!
Thanks again for the tips!

Take a couple of packages of cheap Walmart wieners. Cut them up in 1/4 inch cubes. Bluegills love them. Two dollars will buy bait for the whole weekend. And you can eat the leftovers.

Some of the biggest bluegills you will find are in Soil Conservation lakes built in N Texas In the 70s. I have 4 different ones I fish and they are awesome. Use minnows or worms in the deep part of the lake. Fishing on the bottom.

Try 1/32 oz jigs! I quit fishing for gills with worms and various assorted live baits YEARS AGO when I found out they will MURDER small crappie jigs. In clear water blue/white, chartreuse, chartreuse/red, firecracker, black/chartreuse and even solid white, will all work beautifully for big 'gills. I cast them out, give about a two count and start a SLOW, STEADY retrieve. DY-NO-MITE!
Good luck!

I agree with that,as I have caught a few nice ones when crappie fishin in the boat slips...Surprised me! I have also caught a bunch with a piece of that Berkley corn-in -a jar on the jig.

Yep, I use a small crappie jig with a crappie nibble on the hook, and BAM! I may go old school at the Cabins though, drop-shot with worms or bacon about 12" up from the bottom. Gotta teach my kids how we did it back in the day.
