I just bought my first yak and have a question about the paddle...what do you do with it when you get to a spot to fish? How do you keep it from falling out of the yak?

Thanks for any help

Leave it in your lap and have it connected to a leash.

Number one, buy a paddle leash. This will keep it attached to the yak should you turtle or in the event it falls out. Two, some kayaks come with paddle keepers, which usually run along the length of the kayak and attach via a bungie.

Regardless, if there is any current and you aren't anchored, you will want your paddle close at hand so you can stay or reposition. I usually lay it across my lap when I am fishing so I have access to it when needed, with the leash attached, of course.

There are various types of paddle holders available. I use a bungee holder, you can see it in this photo. I also use a paddle leash.

Another dumb question, I bought a paddle....how do I connect a "leash" to the paddle? The one I bought doesn't have a ring or clip on it?

thanks

I use Seattle Sports leashes, shown below. All of my paddles are 2-piece paddles, so slip one half through the loop, connect the paddle halves, and clip the other end to the kayak. If your paddle is just 1 piece, just pass the clip end through the loop around the paddle, and then clip to the kayak. I tried the tightly coiled leashes and hated them.

Get some Yakgrips, they are pads that attach to the shaft of the paddle and make paddling more comfy.

Bit far for me. Take a Saturday and make a stop at Mariner Sails in Dallas.
Great group of folks that can help you out with all the rigging accessories
you will need.

I keep mine in my lap for quick access when I need to make small adjustments to stay lined up with my target. Like the others said paddle leash is a must, I made my own using a carabiner some paracord and a velcro strap.

a simple parachute cord about 6 foot long with a loop tied in both ends with a bowline knot; one to tie on the yak, the other slips on the paddle before you put it together; all you need; cheap-p-

I use the little taco style paddle clips. Easy in and easy out.
