Recently I tore down and cleaned my Abu 4600 C4, I had a print out of the schematics and followed a video my buddy recommended on how to clean it, as I had never done it before. Now it feels very rough, like sand is in it or something. The only thing I can think of would be I might have messed up those fiber discs but I don't know. Anybody have any experience or advice on this? hmmm

When I cleaned my dads 6000 tc same thing happened to me, my problem was I had a small bit of line between the spool and the frame causing it to feel gritty.

Hmm, guess I'll break it back down and look at little closer. You have any idea if I can order replacement parts if needed?

You can get parts from Southwestern parts and service in Dallas. Or there's online shops the sell them or eBay. I was looking up how much parts were for my 6500 c4 and found them on ereplacement parts.com not sure if they're legit or not. I've ordered parts on eBay for an old Abu 5000. If you find a part is bad, just look for the part # on the schematic and search for it. A lot of the round reels share parts so could be common. Also on another possibility it could be the level wind pawl cap may not be tight enough so the worm gear and pawl could be grinding

I would start by eliminating possible causes. Take the spool out and see if it is still rough. That would narrow the area to a certain part of the reel. The spool has to be in it to operate the level wind parts. Then it will be easier to trace the problem.

You might want to check and see if your spool is seated correctly. Sometimes, the brake blocks might not be pushed all the way down and the spool won't seat correctly.
If you are concerned about the drag washers, here is the order:

Of course the drive shaft isn't in this pic, but the order is from left to right. Felt washer, flat washer, felt washer, grooved flat washer, felt washer, flat washer.

Your spring washers, which go on top of the anti-reverse sleeve, should be facing opposite of each other like this ()
Hope this helps.

mt vote would be brake locks. Many times these will slip back down in the engage position particularly if you put the spool in with the reel sideways like it would mount on the rod. This sometimes causes the end of the brakes to be pinched by the spool.

I always push the brakes back to the center and then hold the reel vertical while inserting the spool. Then place the handle side plate on and slowly rotate the spool with a finger until the sides and spool fall together. You will feel the "click" when everything is seated correctly. Now you can turn the reel on its side without any problems.
