Well I've got a problem...I tried to catch a bottle of rum that was falling off the counter and as I grabbed it, it shattered in my hand... Only cut me in one place, but it's a doozy. Cut at the base of my left hand middle finger. Got it sewn back up ( 10 stitches). The biggest problem is it cut the nerve on one side of my finger. I have no feeling on the entire side of that finger. Now I had the nerve surgically sewn back together, but there is no guarantee it will heal.
Here's my problem...I can't hold my RH bait casters ( in my left hand) much less set the hook... I tried my spinning rod and it wasn't too bad. I'm thinking I may have to change all my bait casters to LH. This really stinks. Tying knots is also a huge challenge. If anyone has any other ideas on what I might try, I'd welcome it. Not looking for any pity, I'll figure something out.

I would let my hand heal and do the physical therapy exercises, but that's me. If you have to go fishing, try this... RC Fishing

Give it some time and see if it gets any better. I went through a couple'a pretty radical brain surgeries in Jan. 1991 and it left me with some paralyzes in my left arm and hand. My fingers drew backwards over the top of my hand. I had to have an operation where they cut them half way off around the top and cut in the bottom just past my finger to pull the tendons where I could hold something in my hand. That was in Mar 1993. I remember the doctor telling me it would look funny and people would stair at it. I replied it looks funny now and people stair at it. If you can fix it to where I can hold a rod and reel in it I will never complain. Bottom line I can hold a rod and reel in it. I use my right hand to help feel sensitivity and to set the hook. Every once in a while I miss one but I can still fish. I tried all the different changes but they were to awkward. So give it some time and don't give up to soon.

Towards the end of last year I noticed my little finger on my left hand was going numb. To make a long story short, it progressed until half of my left hand is numb. I had surgery but it did not correct it. I thought my bass fishing was over but I was determined to try. I started casting with both hands so I did'nt throw my rod in the lake and over time it's gotten to be second nature. Now I still have a heck of a time tying on lures but even that is getting better. You will learn to compensate with time and determination. Another thing that helped was I started crappie fishing which requires less casting until things got better. Good luck and hang in there.
To whom much is given, much is required.

Things happen in life, thats just part of it. You said you didn't want any pity and that is the biggest step getting over any bumps you get in life. You will be just fine. If you are ever in my neck of the woods and want to swap lies and stuff give me a holler.

I'm sorry for your injury cutting into you and your fishing time. I'm right handed and use nothing but LH retrieve reels. I get more power and strength to control the fish. Not to mention it is also nice not switching hand after each cast!Only down side is that sometimes they can be hard to find the reel you want in a LH model. I also use palomar knots on 95% of knot ties. Its quick, easy, and strong.

I would not give up on never having the feeling and sensation back in that part of your hand. Several years ago I got my right thumb caught between my boat and a stump trying to prevent a scratch in my boat. It completely crushed and tore my thumb from my hand down to the 1st knuckle. The tip of my thumb was hanging on only by the skin on the inside of my hand. I made it to Baylor and had my thumb reattached. For the longest time I did not have any feeling and sensation in my thumb. Cold days were the worst it hurt like hell. Slowly the feeling and sensation came back and now except for one small area on the inside of my thumb I do not know any difference at all. Do not give up. Hopefully the feelings will come back to your finger.

I wonder if you can get the "disability" exception and get free fishing license now? It's therapy!!

I had a half knee replacement in dec of 2011, when they do one of these your nerves are cut and the whole front of my leg lost feeling. after 2 yrs it started to get feeling back in it and is now almost to the point that I can kneel on it again without a problem. nerves take time to grow back and most of the time they will, patience.
