GW It's a start, but the video leaves a lot to figure out. If you get close to where Matthew Carroll lives, he's really good to show you the basics. Once you see the real deal, you can decide if the kit is for you or not. If it's not feasible to meet up with an experienced tier, the kit will get you started.

Go to barlows on 75 and beltline. Get a vise, some flex seal, a bobbin, whip finisher, scissors, and a ton of materials. Get ya about 5 dozen jigs because it's real addictive. I would stay away from the maribou it's messy and hard to use. They will show you how to make a jig if you go in on saturday.

Matthew Carroll always seems to be willing to give some advise. I need to get out there so he can learn me something sometime.
Jigs Rock!!

Oh yeah I say barlows because they are WAY cheaper and have a better selection of feathers already trimmed down to size. You can also usually make it out of there without 4 tee shirts, two coffe cups, a bass pro hat, and gallon of boat wax!! LOL!!

Hey Grub,

I like the kits, they are a good beginner for someone just getting into the world of tying, But if all you are really wanting to dive into is crappie jigs, I think if you buy the components seperatly you will end up with a better kit and for less money. I am in the mid-cities area all the time, and could meet up with you sometime. I dont claim to be a money making jig tying guru. BUt i have been tying for about 10 years and have been taught by some of the best old men and jig fishermen that Lake Worth/Eagle Mountain/Weatherford/Benbrook has everseen.

I need to get out there Brian and get all that and make some. I do like the jigs Richard uses and mark Jones...I was looking at them today when out there and Richard stopped by. The eye of the jig is set further back than a normal jig, hence when it hangs, it doesnt hang down, but rather flat, like a fish. Richard swears by them. They do hang different than a normal jig, there is no question. But never have seen any jigs like it. Not sure if it makes a difference, but it does make sense for jigging.

I bought one of their kits. It comes with a large number of bass jigs and a lot of hair. The video is ok, but if you cant get someone to show you how to build one you can find several sites on the web that better illustrate how to tie the knot, which I think is the biggest "trick". Hindsight being 20/20 I would save my money and go to Barlows and buy a better quality vice and the materials that I wanted.

If you tie a loop knot with light line the jigs will hang horizontal. If you dip one in the water just under the surface you will see. Tom I will show you how to do it soon.

I do the loop knot, and know that helps in the hanging horizontal, I am not a total tard, lol. But if you look at his jigs, they definately hang more horizontal than a normal jig...loop not or otherwise. The loop knot helps, but look at those jigs sometime when tied on, they are definately more horizontal. Again, it may make little or no difference, I am not sure. But one point of the loop knot is to make the jigs as horizontal as possible..

But....I do not think I will be able to get any. The guy had someone make the heads for him...and died. He had the molds...and he cannot get them back as all his property is frozen in probate...Richard said this guy got a patent on the design 30 years ago and has made them ever since.

You know your probably right, I recall the eye of the jig being at an upward angle like 45 degrees or something. I want to make my own jigs but i want to find a good mold first. I want to make sure I get one thats just right. I know Ernest is definatly right about the size of the jig relative to weight and size of hook. Like a having a 1/4 oz jig with a hook half the size of the "walmart" equipment.

Grub Worm,

If you decide to get a kit from BPS, make sure you get one for tying jigs and not tying flies. They have two kits. I got the jig tying one years ago and am glad I did. I did not have to schedule meeting anyone. I just popped the VHS in the player and kept re-winding til I understood and got it right. There will probably be opportunities to meet other TFFers who tie jigs. We have had several jig tying parties in the past and I feel another one coming on.

Happy and Safe Fishing,
