I might be moving down there from the DFW area and was wondering if the bass fishing was good down there. I know falcon and Amistad are a few hours away.

Medina lake and choke canyon are your best bet for black bass close to SA. Medina is small but a has a good bass population and even some lily pads around docks or at least used too. LOL

The Guadalupe River just north of San Antonio has several very good bass lakes. Dunlap,Mcqueeney,Placid,Meadow, and Wood. Dunlap's ramp in below IH 35 in New Braunfels. There is no public ramp for Mcqueeney. Only a gas line ramp located off of FM 725. Placid's ramp is located below IH 10 in Seguine. Meadow is off of FM 181 and Wood lake is just south of Gonzales.

Poor Guy... I've been thinking about moving to the DFW area so I'm closer to better bass lakes.. LOL..
Dunlap is the best choice for a possible lunker.. Sometimes those fish wont hit a lure at Dunlap.. With 2.5 billion baitfish in the water at times they are hard to catch.. When they can dart 2 feet and get a mouthful of shad anytime they want, its hard..
Medina is a ditch right now.. It's 98% empty.. I don't believe you can launch at this time..
Canyon is water ski - jet ski heaven.. Bass fishing is not that great on Canyon..
Braunig and Calaveras should be awesome bass fishing lakes.. But somebody decided to turn them into salt water fishing lakes ??? I guess the entire Texas coast was not enough for the Redfisherman.. I have heard that Calaveras was at one time the #1 option for bass fishing in the entire state of Texas.. Who decided to nix a great bass lake for Redfish ? I will never understand that.. Of course, I have no clue how Obama got elected a second time either.. But that's for another forum..
Has anyone caught a BASS larger than 5 pounds on Choke Canyon the past 2 years ?? I read the forum a lot and every time someone has posted anything about Choke they caught a few dinks or got skunked.. I know its been two years (July 2012 - July 2014) because I bought my first boat in July 2012..
LBJ is your best bet to actually catch a bass.. Its 72.5 miles from my house and it's where I go most of the time.. If you get stuck moving here, live on the far north side so you are closer to LBJ.. I'm 33 miles from Dunlap.. So I am always driving at least 66 miles round trip whenever I take the boat out of the garage..
San Antonio is a GREAT place to live.. But it's not the best location for a bass fisherman.. You will drive lots of miles to chase Largemouth.. The best lakes to get to if you want to go farther than 100 miles = I'm 235 miles from Falcon.. I'm 189 miles from Amistad.. Fayette Lake is 128 miles from me.. The Dallas lakes are out of the question because I don't care to haul a boat up IH35 when I can get to Falcon by going down IH35.. IH35 between San Antonio and Waco is a horrible drive.. Keep your eyes on the road ! Its much easier to head south towards Laredo..
I'm hoping for a tropical storm or five sometime soon.. I would love to have a chance to hit Falcon when you can go down there thinking your going to catch a hundred.. That has not been the case since I bought my boat.. I've read about guys catching so many fish at Falcon that their hands were bleeding.. Maybe the state should think about draining Amistad.. It would certainly fill up Falcon again.. Just kidding.. Hope this helps.. Good luck to you sir..

Lake Austin, Bastrop, Colleta Creek, Ivy are all reasonable driving distances from San Antonio area.

I think the gloom and doom post 2 up is a bit exaggerated.
Dunlap is a great fishery IF you put your time in and learn it. I have posted pics before and have shown what i have caught there.. and the thursday nighters are showing you the size in that lake
Placid is under-utlized and has great fish if you put your time in as well.
He seems to have ommitted lake Austin which is an amazing fishery (for now). Fish it at night this time of year and it can be awesome.
Bastrop is within a reasonable distance and will give you the numbers you seek.
Ill trade lewisville for ANY of these.

Medina is dried up, well almost. Choke Canyon is amazing... but it's dead right now because of the low water. You can still go there and catch 30-50 small fish with a chance of getting a 6+ pounder. Lake Austin or Dunlap are your best bet at catching a fish of a lifetime, I'd say Lake Austin is the best of all these lake, right now. As Chuck (Banker always fishing) said any of the Guadalupe lakes are good fishing, you just have to figure them out. Lake Bastrop is a phenomenal numbers lake. You can go there and catch 2-5 pounders til' your hands fall off. However, since it's a power plant lake, the water is really hot right now and any fish over 6+ pounds is very hard to come by. Fayette County Reservoir is a great lake for numbers and good size bass, like Bastrop but a little better. Canyon Lake is fishing pretty well right now for being the lake that it is, but like any Guadalupe lake, Lake Austin, Dunlap, McQueeney, etc... they're gonna have heavy ski traffic in the Summer. However, if you can withstand it, you'll be rewarded. If there's anything I can help you with, please feel free to PM me.

I did not mean to sound doom and gloom Chris.. I was just giving him my opinion on the difference in the SA area and the Dallas area.. I think the Dallas area is probably the best place for a bass fisherman to live in the United States.. There are a ton of options up there and the folks up there probably have several nearby lakes they can be at in less than 15 minutes.. If he moves to San Antonio his "good fishing" options will decline and his driving time to fish will increase..

Really enjoyed McQueeny earlier this year when we had a little fun tournament out there
Had about 16 lbs in 4 hours before we had to hit the road

I lived in San Antonio for 13 years. It's sad that people mention Dunlap, Medina, Placid, etc before the big three of Choke Canyon, Falcon, and Amistad. But, those three have taken a huge spiral down in the last few years. Falcon is still the best of the three. I would also throw in Fayette Co lake, it's about a 2 hour drive from SA.

i lived on mcqueeney when the public ramp was still there, there are some giants in the pads around the island. i would only hit the river lakes this time of year very early or at night unless you want the wave pool effect for a few days. its rich kids drinking in daddys boat time of the year, you'll have to listen to cheesy rap music all day and avoid drunk swimmers. actually used to do pretty good fishing the river on canyon lake. choke was sick back then but havent been sinse the decline. hope you like chicks with tats!

My 2 cents. Falcon, Amistad, Coleto Creek, LBJ, Canyon, Dunlap, and Placid. But, if you want some peace and quiet go out to Kerrville and launch next to Chili's. It's TM only and holds good numbers, my PB from there was 5+. and you can launch across from the VA Hospital on another body of water. You can run gas in there but I wouldn't unless you know that lake. It has pads, shallow spots and stumps. Both are on the Guadalupe and both hold some 10+. That's my 2 cents. PM sent.

Pretty much sums it up---really hope choke gets some water. That is such an amazing bass fishing lake when conditions are right..... Poor Guy... I've been thinking about moving to the DFW area so I'm closer to better bass lakes.. LOL..

Don't count choke out. I've fished choke at least 3 times a week for the past two years and there are still some decent fish being caught. Last October a buddy of mine put a DD in the boat and this year I've personally watched many 7-9's caught. You just have to be patient and fish slow. It's not like it was in its hay day but it's far from the Dead Sea.

No doubt you have to drive a few miles (more than a few for some lakes) to get to good fishing in the San Antonio area, but that is true of DFW also. There are quite a few lakes around but the drive time from one area to the other can be quite a bit.
