I will be the first to admit it. I am a shallow water bass fisherman. I love the top water bite, and enjoy tossing a spinner bait. My tackle box does not contain DD22s, Even jigs are sparse in my tackle.
Now I live on Kentucky Lake. I have enjoyed some success working docks around my neighborhood, but not much success. Locals tell me that the bait fish stack up on the ledges in the main lake and the mouth to the main lake during this hot weather period. There are some impressive drop offs.
Locals suggest finding those drop off, look for fish and then bounce a six inch worm across the shallow area until it gets to the drop off and then just let it fall. Sounds reasonable to me. Is this how you would attack the ledges? What alternative presentations/baits would you use?
When I get a hand held GPS I will be hiring a guide to learn his approach.
Thanks in advance for your ideas.

It depends on how deep the ledges are. The worm idea would certainly work but I bet the fish have not seen a flutter spoon drug off the edge. If you have a way to precisely mark the edges a drop shot worm or swimbait presentation may be good as well. Good luck.

When I lived there back in the 70's; it was all about the bushes and chunking that spinner bait. Now it is about the shell beds out on the adjoining creeks to the river channel.
The DD22 will be a good bait to put in your box for the shell beds. Your guide will probably pull one out and fish it parallel with that ledge in 12 to 15 ft.
My high school friend Tommy Bradberry out of Dresden, TN., is one of the best crappie guys on KY. Lake out of Paris Landing. Tommy has also been racking up some great catches on Bass out on the shell beds. He might be worth looking into and is a very nice guy. Tommy want charge you a arm and leg for a trip. Sorry I don't have his # for you; but can get it, if your search doesn't work.

Yep, the buck brush in the early AM and late PM does produce some. I will have to find out about the shell beds. I assume these are fresh water mussel beds. I will look Mr. Bradberry up. I will have to pick up a TN license...$41. Here in KY it is only $5.

Couldn't hurt dragging a spoon along the bottom until it gets to the ledge then just let it fall off the edge Crig spoon jig. Drag a drop shot slowly.

You are on the best ledge fishing lake in the country. O my get off the bank and get a football jig. 5 and 6XD in chart and powder blue. a big spoon works well also. the ledges are all over the place you just need to learn them. You need some good electronics a good map chip and you can find them pretty easy.

while I have never fished that lake, we do have to fish ledges a lot on Amistad. The one piece of advice I would offer is if the ledges are deep and you are dragging baits off the top and letting them fall. the hardest thing to do is to click your bail and make sure the bait falls tight to the ledge. If you don't or you spool is tight when falling the bait will swing back towards the boat and there are times where fish will not swim out and get it. When struggling with this I place my clients on the shallow side and have them throw deep and drag it up the ledge so they have an easier time keeping in contact with the structure and this allows them to pick up some bites they normally would have missed. I hope this helps you, Good Luck in your search !
Respectfully, Jc Gwynne

And don't forget about the current effect. Not sure about Kentucky Lake but the TVA lakes fish will turn on when they start generating.

Thanks in advance for your ideas. I think I would TAKE THEIR ADVICE! Seems like they know what they are doing and what works. Most of the BASS Pro's do the same thing in their past tournaments up there.

parallel to a ledge toss a 6-7" senko crigged style with a light split shot, I use 1/8oz when I do it.
cast way out and let it fall natural, even let some more line out if it is deeper. line will just load up normally and set the hook.

We had the one event this year FLW on Kentucky Lake. I also fished ledges at Pickwick. I have much to learn about ledges, but here's what I can say.
1) Ledge bite is better as they pull more water.
2) Seems the little ledge points on downstream side held more fish.
3) As mentioned, shell beds can be hot spots.
4) Cranks, spoons, and swimming baits when fish aggressive.
5) Drop shot and more drop shot anytime. Run your boat along ledge with sonar, look for fish and drop on their head. Stroke up and see if fish follows, keep working it on them until they bite.
One of the better tour ledge fisherman is actually one of our local boys, Tom Reddington.
