I'm staying in Blanco for the weekend, doing a little floating in the Guadalupe River, and in my free time I want to catch a Rio Grande Cichlid. Anybody know where I can go to catch one? I've heard of a few caught in this are but I just wanted to know if anyone has any experience or tips to give me to catch one. I have the gear, but just want to know any locations. Thanks!

The Blanco River has some nice ones. I have caught em both inside and outside of the Blanco State Park. Right now they are staying pretty close to the shorelines in shallow water. Use worms. Good luck!

I found them near the shorelines and flats if you choose to wade the open flats.

Were you catching them on flies? I wanna catch some on my new fly rod, thinking about throwing a small nymph, but what other flies will they hit? Thanks for the info!

Yes flies work well. Any small nymph dropped in their face should work - these fish seem very curious. The most effective fly I have fished is the Rio Getter found at Living waters Fly shop in Round Rock. But most anything such as Briminators will work too! http://livingwatersflyfishing.com/store/flies/rio-getter/Les
