It's another common name for them. It's like what people refer to as warmouth.

It's my understanding that Pumpkins are not native to Texas, some have been stocked in ponds and maybe a few released to public waters but they are a more Northern sunfish. All the pretty blue/turquoise/rust color fish around here are Longears.

Pumpkin

Longear

Pumpkin Seed Sunfish are part of the Sunfish family. They are mainly found in the Northeast parts of the United States but have spread out over the years to the far northwest in the states of Oregon and Washington State. They are rarely found in Texas.(Wikipedia) eeks

Check out Wikipedia or Google Pumpkin Seed Sunfish. It will show you all you need to know about them. thumb

Let me clarify. I meant that pumpkinseed is another common name for a long ear in Texas, but that it is like the warmouth. There is only one species that is actually a warmouth, but often people refer to rock bass and green sunfish as warmouth as well.

Warmouth

Green Sunfish

Rock Bass

I have caught both real pumpkinseeds, up North, and real warmouth. The top one you posted is a real pumpkinseed and you can tell by the gill plate.

If you are looking for a great place to catch real warmouth the Okefenokee Swamp is loaded with them, and fliers. I think fliers are still my favorite bream to eat.
