They don't and can't. I'm from Detroit and fished lake Eire quite a bit. They didn't cripple the fishery there at all. May have helped it....

Can somebody please confirm what they look like. I saw some that looked like This at a local lake. Are they zebra mussels?

I have read an article that talked about a few ways to try to remove them. One method in particular worked well in a small lake no more than several acres big but the cost is far to much to use in any of our lakes. Heres some I found in belton this spring. Iv only fished belton about once a month this year since March but each time out I have found them several times. They are highly populated in several areas of Belton lake.

I live on the lake and go out in the water to cool off pretty much everyday Every rock you pick up has them on them Belton is loaded with them

I used to shore fish Lake Michigan when I lived in Chicago. They're all over in that lake as well. I don't know of the ecological impact but the water is pretty darn clear (free of phytoplankton?) during the summer.
One solution they're toying around with is Zequanox which is EPA approved. As for cost and long term impact, I'm not sure of the details but might want to Google it.
