OK guys, let me start off by saying that I'm looking for a new surf/jetty rod, but the type of rod I'm looking for I think fits more in line with how carp rods are typically made, so I thought I'd ask here first.
What I'm looking for is a fairly lightweight spinning rod (i.e. not an Ugly Stik), preferably 11 or 12', but I'd consider a 10, capable of throwing weights from 3/4 or 1 oz. up to around 3-4 oz. at most (although I probably wouldn't throw over 2 oz. with it). Preferably a slimmer rod (i.e. not one of these big thick fiberglass rods). Fast action is a definite plus, but not required by any means. Planning to use this for throwing lures and actively fishing smaller baits (small chunks of cut bait, dead shrimp, live shrimp, corks, etc.) with trout, reds, and whiting in mind. Ideally, a fast tip capable of throwing the lighter stuff and playing smaller fish with a good backbone should something a bit larger hit. Now the kicker, I'm trying to keep the budget under $100 as I've already spent way too much on hooks, weights, and a heavy duty stomper surf rod recently.

Here's what I know thus far:
Whuppin' Sticks-too heavy and just don't feel right. I've got a few up to 9', and they're ok for chucking a bait and leaving it for a while.
Tidewater-too thick and heavy
Ugly Stik-same as tidewater
Jarvis Walker-same as tidewater
Bass Pro CatMaxx-too stiff in the tip @ the length I want
Daiwa Maddragon-poor reviews, won't consider it

The closest I've found:
Star Paraflex Surf rod-don't remember which model exactly, but it was a nice rod close to what I wanted, but way out of my budget @ $200
10' Ugly Stik Bigwater-Action really close to what I want, but the rod is too thick and heavy for active use
Cabela's European Predator-been a long time since I held one, but from what I recall, it was also pretty close to what I'd like
Penn Prevail-this may be what I end up getting as it seems to be the best compromise I've found thus far, planning to go look at them again later this week

I realize I'm asking alot in my requirements, but I figure someone here may know exactly which rod (carp rod or surf rod, I don't really care which it actually is) fits the bill.

Buy this rod at 3.00tc or 2.75 at for $99 you will be extremely happy for what your wanting to do. With a little practice and the right reel you will be amazed at casting distance and fish playing ability for a rod in the price range you named. Edit it's a spinning. Rod, check out the reels on the site or look at the salt striker with a bait runner from cabelas in the 65 size these reels are made by okuma and are proven on big fish and for less then 90$ should be a great match to the rod, not the best line lay for distance work but the durability and drag system make up for it.

The 2.75 will handle casting weight up to 3oz with out issue your could push the 3.0tc to 4oz both blanks are very thin and light compared to the rods you have named.

It's a 12' that can with little effort cast the mentioned weight over a 100 yards and cost less then 100 dollars and has the diameter of about a nickel in the butt section. Trust me, it's the rod he is looking for.

What about the 13' 3.5 lb rod? Would it still be able to launch the light stuff?

I trust you totally.

But he's looking for a 11', 12' rod, light weight, lure rating 3/4oz to 4oz, under $100.

If there's such a rod, I would buy 10 of them, at least.

This is a 13' 3.5tc with 4oz of distance lead on the end of a 60lb shock leader and 12pb main line. I was fishing about 30 feet off the OPPOSITE bank smile

Holy carp that's a loaded rod!
I usually throw 4 oz on my 10' pro anglers and my tsunami trophy series 10' with baitcasters at around 80-90 yds with a chunk of shad, but I don't know that I've ever loaded one that well! I need practice.

I used to live on Golf course with a driving range and the grounds crew would let me practice my casting on the driving range with yardage markers at night while the lights where on but the course was closed. I found that a tennis ball with a small hole cut in it and the hair burned off with my lead tucked inside then wrapped with duct tape was the best practice method it kept it from getting buried and stuck in mud. I busted some 160-180 yard pendulum cast.

Edit: I have photos somewhere I can dig up with a 12' rod loaded to the reel seat on a pendulum cast....at one time I was known for breaking rods casting them

you are a real pro. flehan

With my 12' surf rod, I can cast a 3oz popper 110, 120 yards, occasionally, up to 130 yards or more, with wind behind me. grin

Couple of friends can cast over 150 meters with their Century naro surf blank, built by themselves. That blank costs close $800 each.
