I recently bought a 20 year old JetSki trailer for $250. The tires and bearings were shot but the trailer was all galvanized with no paint. I removed the old skids and added a piece of treated 4x4 across the back and notched a treated 4x6 for the front brace.
Originally, I just bolted two 9 foot pieces of 3 inch schedule 40 PVC on 12 inch centers and used it as a single trailer for my PA12. I started researching on how I might convert it to a double to carry two PA12s since I have two fishing buddies with the same kayak as me.
I discovered a product called UniStrut, which is used for mounting commercial electrical equipment to walls. It is made to hold a lot of weight and is flexible in that it uses sliding bolts on the bracket. I went to Lowes and found everything I needed to convert my trailer to a double.

I also replaced the bearings and wheels tires and added a spare tire rack.

Here is what UniStrut looks like with a spring loaded bolt:

I prefer the non-spring loaded bolts for the two inside rails because they are easier to loosen and slide to a new position. The springs do not slide easily:

I used a 60 inch section of UniStrut in the back section and a 56 inch section in the front. For two kayaks, I set the PCV on 12 inch centers on either side. If I only want to carry one kayak, I slide the two middle PCV pipes to toward the center of the trailer on 12 inch centers. Makes for a very flexible setup.

I also used schedule 40 PVC on my kayak cart that I use to move and store my PA12 in the garage. I used 5 inch locking casters to make it easy to maneuver:

Does it float?
I had one that did. Very frustrating bang

Great idea using that unistrut for adjustability - not only go from 1 to 2 pa's but accommodate other boats. Question, does that front "pin" go through the handle of the PA when hauling a single? Good job - thanks for posting.

Yes, the pin works perfectly on the front handle. That is why I kept it.

THanks, nice setup. I have a similar single and have been thinking about setting it up for double. Could you tell me what the width of your trailer is between the fenders. Likewise, if you have any pics of it with boats on it and also your connection between the trailer and the 2x's, I would appreciate that. Don't go take pics on my account....just if you have them already. Thanks and nice clean work. smile

I am out of town right now so can't give you exact measurements. I think it is around 52 inches between the fenders. That is one reason I have a 4x4 with a 2x4 on top of it to clear the top of the fenders. I used 60 inches across the back and 54 at the front but 56 should be more than enough for both. As far as the front, I used a 4x6 and notched in 1 1/2 inches to fit tightly on the trailer tongue. Those are 10 foot PVC pipes so I am guessing that they are about 7.5 feet from the back pieces. I'll post exact measurements when I get home.

About to start my own trailer build, and I really like the way you made this easily adjustable to carry one or two kayaks. Just might have to use your ideas.

Here is a picture of one of Kelly's inventions for those hot, still days on the lake. It is made from PVC and a large golf umbrella and slides into the scupper holes behind the seat:

I would modify from the scupper holes, which are a weak spot on your yak, to the rod holders that are made much stronger in case a very strong wind torques the umbrella... Hope you consider this suggestion.
