Boating yesterday and saw something odd looking in the water, got closer and it was a deer swimming from the islands to the east shoreline south of Highport. She was really moving !! No idea what possessed her to take the plunge as it's several hundred yards. That was a first for me and really amazed how fast she could swim.

I have always heard it means they got chased in by a mountain lion, not sure on validity of that but makes sense I suppose.... and sometimes a deer just has to cross some water I guess too haha

Those islands are covered in deer tracks. I watched a doe being chased by a buck jump in by Eisenhower and swim across to west burns run. They can swim for miles no problem.

I used to have a home at Holly Lake Ranch that overlooked an island in a 20 ac lake. Does would bed their fawns on the island all the time. Go feed, then swim back to the island to nurse the fawns. Once the fawns start weaning, momma doe will make them swim from the island to shore where they could begin eating a typical diet.

Very common on Texoma when it is not a weekend! Deer are very strong swimmers!

Deer are good swimmers. I read a report several years ago where researchers were doing telemitry tracking. There was one buck that was swimming the Mississippi river twice a day. Bedded down on the MO side but his breeding range was on the IL side.

True. Our neighbors at Pk just saw one. Some of our deer are missing and others have attack marks.

Seen it a few times, Choke Canyon, Somerville, Coleto Creek. One time i was sure there were some does in the water at Rayburn, ended up being some dogs.

I was kayak fishing in the Neuse River in North Carolina and a deer jumped out of the woods and hit the water about 10 feet from me. I thought for sure a gator was attacking me.

I've seen it a couple of times. Once a big herd (>10) came from OK to Treasure Island and cruised across a large area of 2' deep water on the run. THat was an awesome sight with all the water spraying up as they ran. I didn't even think about my camera that time. I did get the shot below the first time I ever saw some in the water though. They were chugging along pretty good! That's JD Lyle in the background...

A pretty good size herd lives on the islands. I've seen them out there before too.
