It's hot out there...too hot to not be catching fish while out. So what do you target this time of year when it's hot enough to make you rethink leaving the house? And what are the basics needed to do it right?

I was thinking about this while out on Southlake in Farmersville after I noticed that my go-to crawfish crank wasn't having much luck. It worked great out there 2-3 months ago before all the hydrilla and lily pads grew so thick, but I had only one dink take a bite at it on Sunday. Maybe it was the heat, maybe the time of day(couldn't get out until noon), or maybe it was the layer of sunscreen rubbing off of my fingers that left an oil slick on the water surface that did it. Or maybe it's that I don't know enough to change my tactics effectively throughout the year. Whatever it is you may be targeting, and whatever rules you think need to be adhered to in order to even have a chance of success, I'd love to hear it!

Ahh man, right now its perfect for the flats....pull up on a small island, lay in the water to cool off then start working the shallow...one of our luxuries of the upper laguna madre here in corpus christi

Fishing has been awesome this summer but I have been targeting hybrids. Have mostly fished benbrook and Lewisville. Most fish have been caught on slabs

Bass has slowed down for me so I might go after some cats this weekend and change it up a bit

Man that sounds nice...I got absolutely cooked on Sunday with the low breeze. It was so hot I'm trying to come up with a shade...my plan is to get one of those 'chair-brellas' (essentially an umbrella with a few pivots in the shaft and a c-clamp on the bottom) and try connecting it to my visipole sticking up out of my rod-holders right behind me. Should provide some shade and fold down out of the way when I want to stand and fish.

I was thinking this myself...it will be weekend after next before I can get out, but wanted to try some cats to test out my shade setup and just relax out on the water for a bit. I'll post an update if anyone wants to head out as well...will probably be Lavon, Ray Hub, or Lewisville.

River has gotten so warm even the cats have quit biting. Not a keeper the last 3 times out, last time not even a cat, just two turtles (one shell was 2'long). Tomorrow morning going to try gar, been feeding them well my last few times out.

My personal best is still swimming out there just getting bigger. One of these days I will quit feeding it.
