Anyone know the range of Rios in Texas? I'm interested in how far north their range extends, and if it is expanding.

Good populations of Rios can be found from Austin all the way to Mexico. They can also be found in southeast and southwest parts of Texas and in the Texas Hill Country. There is a recent posting of a couple of nice Rios that were caught on the San Gabriel River in Georgetown this week. Other than Georgetown I have heard that some had been caught on Lake Belton which is just north of Georgetown. Side Note: They are a warm water fish and need a warm climate to survive. Any areas where there is a lot of freezing temperatures during the winter time usually has no Rios.

For what I read mainly on this forum Rios are anywhere in South Texas and the Hill Country. I have seen reports of them being caught in the Austin area. I have never caught a Rio. I mainly fish for Cats,Reds,White Bass,Crappie, and Bass. Maybe one of these days I will catch a Rio by accident.

Im right outside Houston. The only place ive caught Rios down here, is in our creek systems. Cypress creek, little cypress creek and spring creek all have little populations of Rios. None are the size of what Banker is catching though!

Ozark88, Are you blind casting to these guys, or is there enough clarity in the bayous to see them?

Les most of the time blind casting up by the banks. simple bobber and hook with night crawlers. Every time I've caught a Rio is was when I found a nice bed were they were holding. And it was right after I had caught a redbreast or bluegill. They seem to group up with them.. if it hasn't been raining, then you have a much better chance of seeing them. We have brown water down here, so it really depends on the creek. There are also some Tilapia in our creeks too. they get bigg
