Jerry,

If you can wait a few months I think the fishing will be better and certainly a lot cooler. August and September are the rainy months and the hottest months. December maybe the most underated month of the year. Most don't like December because of the holidays.

Lake Picachos is the hottest lake in Mexico right now. If your goal is for you and your wife to catch 50 to 100 fish each per day; this is the best choice.

If you have to go in August or September you can still go, I just wanted to make sure you were aware of what the weather is like. I am taking 3 groups this year and we are going in October, December and February.

FYI, my inlaws grew up just outside of Troup and went to Carilse High School. I've spent lots of time in Troup.

forgive me for asking a stupid question...BUT...with all the issues going on at the border is there a safety factor involved to venture into Mexico fishing ?

I have made 11 fishing trips to Mexico but none in the last 8-10 years. I might consider flying in to fish but you couldn't pay me enough to drive in to fish.
Request comments on my statements.

We will fly, no doubt. I drive at least 3000-4000 miles a month for work. I am not driving that far for fun.

Safety is a commonly asked question. I can only tell you that I have been many, many times in the past 3 years and never felt unsafe. I have felt unsafe in the US many times in the past 3 years. As long as you fly in, have the outfitter pick you up, fish, fly out you are just fine. You would be shocked at how many American retirees are walking the tourist strip areas of Mazatlan day and night with no issues. Many of these folks have had a time share or favorite hotel they frequent and have been going for decades. I will tell you that Mazatlan is trapped in about year 1987. It seems like Crockett and Tubbs and the whole Miami Vice crew is their for a taping. Most of you will either spend no time in Mazatlan or just the last night, but Mazatlan is very safe as long as you are in the right section. NO different than any American city.
I would not go or bring guests with me, if I had any concerns. For those who doubt, I'm not sure what to tell you.

+1 on the fly in.

I have been driving in for 25 years with trucks and boats. We have never felt unsafe even when broke down on the side of the road. The locals are always kind enough to stop and help and they seem to always know how to fix the problem or have someone there in a hour or two to get us going again.

I love the experience and will leave tomorrow if I can get someone to go.

I was Blessed to be given a trip for my 50th birthday in April as a gift to cross off one of my bucket list. At NO time did I feel unsafe nor in danger. You also asked about packages. I can say this if I was taking my wife I would ONLY go to Anglers Inn. As this is a fishing trip I can say the accommodations. service, cleanliness, food, that Billy Chapman provides is OUTSTANDING. I saw men that stayed at other lodges and spoke to them and none of the others seemed to me to be even close. If it were just a group of men who were only wanting a place to sleep shower and get some food in the belly it might not be worth the extra expense but to keep mama happy it is a no brainier. Good luck on your trip and keep an open mind while it is still fishing and NOT catching so don't over expect.

Teach a man to fish and he will figure out how to lie on his own!

I could not agree more. I have been to Anglers Inn on El Salto, and I would take my wife there in a heartbeat.

Very safe to go to Salto or Picachos through Matzalan. Last quot I got was $1,895 per person for 5 nights lodging and 2 days each lake of guided fishing at Anglers Inn.

We just got back from El Salto and Anglers Inn last week end and it was the best trip I have ever been on. We never felt unsafe, I agree with Paradise on accommodations they are unbelivable. We caught 114 fish on Friday from 2lbs to 8.8 and the next day we had 10.8,9.8,9,8 didn't count the 6,5 & 4 lbers. I was told that December is one of the best months to be there but I can't imagine it being much better than it was!!!
