I missed the big Saturday event due to traveling and missed the Wednesday event due to car in the shop. I had an itch that just had to be scratched. So I drove up to Texoma this morning in hopes of getting my first striper. Loaded up the gear last night and got to the ramp at Highport Marina about 6:00. Took a little longer to get on the water than I hoped, but I was paddling out by 6:30. Once I got out of the marina I started throwing a chug bug. Basically just drifting with the wind. It didn't take too long to hook up my very first striper. Not too big, but a lot of fight for the size. Got a little dink maybe 10-12 inches after that. The wind basically took me towards the islands north and east of the marina. That is where I got my biggest of the day. A little over 20". Picked up a couple more 16 inchers off the islands. Then I hooked up this little guy. I honestly didn't even know I'd hooked up until I'd retrieved to the kayak. Not sure what this guy was thinking. Eyes bigger than his belly. Topwater bite died down about 9:30. I stopped on one of the islands and looked around a bit. Had a bite to eat then tried some sub surface lures. Didn't have a clue what or how to fish after topwater bite quit and didn't have any luck. Finished up and headed home. All in all a really fine morning on the water. Put 7 fish in the boat, so a very successful first striper outing. Some company would have been the only thing to make it better. Good luck to you guys that head out tomorrow.

Good job Kevin! Ya'll have fun Sat - I'll prob have to pass but if I can make it, I'll find ya'll. Tear 'em up! Spread out on your way out of the marina and look for deeper water schools. Slab them if deep, swimbait them if 15 or less and don't be surprised if you might see some topwater opportunities even in the deeper water. When Tino and I went out, I saw some schools driving bait up in 48FOW - couldn't get to them fast enough and they must have zigged when I zagged. BTW, you will undoubtedly see some schools of smaller fish - doesn't hurt to make sure that is what they are and slab below the school if they are hovered. However, the bait/fish topwater action I saw was nothing but BIG fish........BIG.

Thanks Roger,
For my benefit and others who may not know. When you say slab them when deep. Could you explain this technique. Is is like vertical jigging or throw it long and let it sink to a super deep retrieve?
And I'll echo the top water bite in deep water. My first this morning was in 50 ft of water.

Kev, here is some good info. Just FYI, Ron Ludwig was kinda like the godfather of striper fishing. a lure maker and also founder of the website "six old geezers" which for Texoma striper fishing has been the go-to place to discuss striper fishing - it's still operational and can have some good info and reports there - always a good resource in addition to TFF to check if there are recent reports, etc. Ron has passed but his info lives on. Never met him but his written advice has always been accurate....and appreciated. http://www.reaxtionlures.com/axs_slab%20tips%20-%20paypal.html
