Ford 4.2???? We replaced 3 engines at the shop due to low end knock (Main or Rod Bearings)... Does that tell you something. Not to mention the others that came in just for a diagnos with the same problem.

I have a 2001 4.2L Supercab and get about 18-19 on the highway (longer trips). To work, I drive about 12 miles with a lot of stop and go and get about 15.5 mpg. I've never pulled anything with it.

By the way, does anybody know how to get more mpg out of this engine? K&N, dual exhaust, programmer, spark plugs/wires, ??? I don't tow anything with it yet.

Good preventive maintenance, tune-ups, tire pressure, higher octane fuel helps, and last but not least...... Try not to Keep up with the CHEVYS....

tony#20 i wouldn't put a k&n air filter in it because the oil that is on the k&n filter gets on your mass air flow sensor and will clog it up. had some friends that ran them but they do increase you milege by about 2 or 3 more mpg and they give you a little more hp. those maf sensors are a pain to get to and they are like 300$ for a new one. dual exhaust will help a little bit. i have just a flowmaster on my truck and like pretty well but if you want more mpg and performance magnaflow mufflers is the way to go.hope this helps.
gotta love those pfluegers.

4.2l trucks are a good truck, did have some crank walk issues, but they have been fixed for quite sometime now.

I have an '02. I do regular maint on it. But I did cause some engine misfiring once by using higher octane So I would not recommend the higher octane. The truck overall is good but I dont think the gas mileage is much different than a v8.

Thanks for the heads-up fishnguy! I think I'll look into the dual exhaust setup. How much did you spend on your setup?

i have an 02' f-150 4x4 singlecab with the 4.2 and flowmasters. i can pull anything i put behind it. ecspecially chevy's stuck in mud. their my favorite to pull. gas mileage is like a v8 but i have over sized tires to. i get about 17 on hwy. i spent 190 on my dual exhaust [single in dual out] i wouldn't go with out them but i am going to check out those magnaflo's all and all their really good trucks.
keep hunting and fishing alive. teach a kid.
