Will I need to throw wire leaders while fishing from the private dock. The house I have rented is on the bay not far from salt lake. Last year the reds kept cutting my mono.

If you are running anything less than 20-25 lb test mono they will cut your line fairly often. If you want to keep them from cutting your line (say you are using 12 lb test) tie a "stress" leader (about 30" long) made out of 25-30 lb test onto the end of your line using a swivel. You don't HAVE to use a wire leader. Most of my reals are braided 20 lb (on my small bait casters) and my larger bait casters (Abu Garcia 5500-6500) are spooled with 25 lb mono. I very rarely have break offs because of fish with this set up. Usually if I do have a break off it's because of the fish draggin my line across oyster.
PS This mostly applies to using live bait...at least for me. Lures are a bit of a different story.

You can tie a braided line like Power Pro directly to your jig/lure and that'll stop that from happening.

What Grinder said. Braid straight to hook works fine. Myself, I use 18 to 24 inches of 20 lb leader. Mono for topwater and Fluro for everything else. I fish artificials and need the better lure action you get from a loop knot.

Thanks for the help. I'm using 15 pound Fluor on a lot of my reels for freshwater. I wil stop by tackle town an pick up a few pre made rigs. Spool up a couple with braid. I hope the fishing is good at this dolphin cove house. Stayed at the coastal oasis on salt lake last year. The fishing was good. Caught some specs at night. I bought a couple of wire leaders cause I was getting broke off when the reds started biteing. I felt like I got less bites with the steel
