Stan, I have a question for you since you are working at a GM dealer. I have a 02 suburban (68k) in my shop right now and at start up (when engine is cold) this 5.3 has a ton of lifter noise. Now I have not seen this on any other 5.3's. Noise of course goes away afer warm up. Have you seen this - am i missing something. Sounds like lifters to me. Just wanted to see if you have seen this and if you know about any other problems with the vavletrain on these 5.3's before I quote this customer this repair. I would not question myself but I have not seen this problem on a 5.3 with only 68K.

we have seen a couple where the camshaft lobes were just starting to go flat, but otherwise we have not seen any problems with lifter noise,it is usually knocking noises that we see.

are you using the factory filter are an aftermarket, some of the aftermarket filters dont have a antisiphon check valve in them which could cause this, also what weight oil are you running.I use mobil one in mine without any problems,5w30.
