One year on all new rods. They will still warranty the old rods with proof of sale. And it will have to be shipped there. No more over the counter.

If they sold it with an over the counter warranty, I would think they have to honor the over the counter warranty.

And?
If a rod is defective it will break in the first few minutes of fishing. If this change allows Shimano to lower the price of the rod it's a good thing.

Once again, we see a rod manufacturer tightening up their warranty/return policy. Too many guys raped the manufacturers exchanging rods broken from abuse. I remember one guy on here offering to buy anyone's broken rods for $10-$15. I'm sure he was exchanging them for new through Academy or some other retailer. Tons of unscrupulous fishermen did this for years. Now we all suffer because of their dishonesty

If I heard correctly when I bought 4 of them you could exchange for ANY reason, as long as the rod was broken or a guide was knocked off. That came from the largest shimano dealer in Dallas. Maybe Shimano should have thought this thru before they came up with this idea. Just my 2 cents

I don't think using the warranty that came with the rod is abusing the system at all. If it breaks they replace it. What did they think people would do, break a rod and not use the warranty?

The warranties were intended for defects in materials and workmanship. Those will typically show up within the first few uses. After that, it's typically angler carelessness or abuse that causes breakage.

If they sold it with an over the counter warranty, I would think they have to honor the over the counter warranty. Always had the caveat of the dealer could choose to participate. Often the dealer that does OTC gets hurt in the deal. Say he only has 1 model of that series in stock. A guy comes in with a warranty OTC deal and he swaps him out. Broken rod goes in can in storeroom till he has enough to send in or the rep stops by and gets them. He is now without that rod and if a buying customer comes in wanting that model he is out if stock. That hurts the small shops especially. You can go back in the storeroom and see literally 20-30 broken rods on cans waiting at times.

I hate hearing the stories of people breaking a rod from a rod box lid or tailgate, then using the warranty. Integrity is getting rare.

I see your point but it goes both ways..I have been in several small shops that PUSHED the Shimano rods because of the warranty. They also went as far to tell me the warranty was over the counter no questions asked. FYI - these were "Small shops"
