Was that wrong? Should I have just used dental floss and a couple half hitches?

I saw a guy pulling into the lake entrance last week with two kayaks loaded into his pickup bed with the tailgate closed and the kayaks extending over the cab on a headache rack.
He had them cinched down so tight they had almost bent in two.

The worst I've seen was a guy barreling down the highway and he had a kayak tied on top of his suv and the entire bow section of the kayak was lying folded over touching the middle of his kayak.
He was in for a big surprise when he got where he was going.
Gotta love those rachet straps. They hold reeeeeeal tight!

Give it a few weeks before it ends up on craigslist..

FS: 2 native brand kayaks only used on one trip! Can't get them to track straight, must be my paddling technique I'm sure you could figure it out. $100 off of msrp..

Advice: DO NOT USE RATCHET STRAPS TO TIE YOUR YAK TO A CARTOP!!!!!!!!!!! You will over do it.

I use simple straps with a cam latch. Pull them as tight as you can by hand and that is all you need. One other thing I do is to run a strap thru the far scupper hole, under the yak and back up thru the near scupper hole, then over the top to the other side tie-down. That way, your strap is thru the yak, in case of a strange occurrence. I use Mega Pool Noodles, with a PVC Pipe thru them for my cushions, with a bungee over the top of the yak, hooked to each end.

Hauling several kayaks at a time gets tricky. Ive hauled as many as 5 on my truck at once. Im not saying this wasnt too tight but i certanly can understand why this happened. We all make mistakes and our job as seasoned kayakers is to inform not make fun.

I believe it's only right to inform and give the example of reality of what happens when you torque down on those straps.
Relatively thin plastic over large expanses, clamped down tight in the hot Texas sun is going to get you some serious negative results.
You can't help but feel sorry for someone, but you can sure bet they probably won't do it again!
As for poking fun? Have you seen a kayak bent in half? It does look a little funny you have to admit!

It does. I just know there a lot of people that want to become a part of this sport and may not know anything. Like me and fly fishing and striper fishing. Being educators insted of insulters will ensure most wont make mistakes twice.
