Sorry...Don't know the first thing about fly fishing, let alone good patterns. But try asking or emailing Long Haired Dave, he's the resident carp-on-fly Guru.

BigLou, I'm updating my web site and the new version has fly patterns for carp on it. I'm about 98% done so by Thursday morning at the latest it will be up. You'll see a link "carp flies" at the top of the page.
My website is down below in my signature.

When I was a kid fishing the Brazos river behind Lake Whitney dam, I used to catch carp, shad, and assorted sunfish on small dry flies. Simple patterns like black knat and blue dun worked for me. The flies I used were small around size 14 or so but they caught the big fish just fine on my wimpy noodle fly rod.
I didn't really know what I was doing back then but still caught fish. I didn't really learn to flyfish until I lived in the UK.

I'm not a fly fisherman, but what I've heard from experts is that the best fly to use is the one which is identical to the food source of the fish in the water your fishing. In other words, figure out what's buzzin' around the water and swimmin' the top of the water and supposedly you got yourself a prototype.
