im sure i could ask the catfish boys over in that section, but id rather get the opinions of a few you here. Is the 1/4" mesh worth the extra money over 3/8". I have been cat fishing a lot lately and i use a 6' net with 3/8" mesh and its getting worn out. I HATE catching the 3" shad and their gills/heads get stuck in the net and i spend forever picking them out. Will the 1/4" save time with that. Does it get hung up more? Also will it net the mass amount of ghost minnows i see at the ramps. Haven't had one in 1/4" always bought cheapo 3/8" nets in mono and nylon. i like the nylon ones better they seem to last longer. Just asking before i drop 60$ on a net.

I'm not an expert on cast nets, but there was a post about the same.question maybe a year ago. The general consensus was the 1/4 mesh will not grab smaller shad, and it nay hang up a bit more, and you may spend a bit more time getting bait, but the average size shad you catch will be much bigger. Try finding that thread! It had a lot of good info

When the shad are shallow the smaller net is fine...but it will sink slower. I use 1/2" x7'rad

I use 1/2" x7'rad know what, your right i didnt even think of the 1/2 size, i dont like the smaller shad anways they always get caught up in the 3/8 it agrvates me, 1/2 the smaller ones would fall right out dont mid picking out the good size shad if they get stuck. the 1/2 drop rate would be alot faster too, thanks man.

I found an easier way to get those little shad out of the net. With the weights in water hold the horn with some slack. Grab a point in the net about half way down and shake. May have t do this a couple of times around the net but most of those little guys will pop right out of there. Works on little catfish too.

May have t do this a couple of times around the net but most of those little guys will pop right out of there. ill try it for sure, its amazing how some of them get so stuck i end up killing them getting them out of net.

Choose The Right Mesh Size
This is the size of the spacing of the mesh in the net. Mesh size impacts the size of baitfish that you can catch and how quickly the net sinks in the water.
1/4 Inch Mesh Stay away from these. These are really for catching very small baits like ghosts minnows. These sink really slow which will be an issue in deeper water.
3/8 Inch Mesh - This is a good average size for catching bait. It will catch small shad and you will have fewer issues with fish being gilled (their heads stuck in the net). Youll catch bigger shad and all of the smaller shad with this mesh size. This is a good mesh size for when the bait is not in deeper water and if you want smaller baits. The biggest problem with a net this size is you will still catch lots of very small shad (which is why I dont use a 3/8 inch mesh).
1/2 Inch Mesh The larger the mesh the faster the net sinks. Smaller shad will get gilled in the net and some will swim through the net. This is the smallest net size I throw because I prefer not to use the shad smaller than a few inches long. When bait is not really deep a 1/2 inch mesh is my choice.
5/8 Inch Mesh - This will sink faster than the 3/8 or 1/2 inch mesh. More smaller shad will get gilled and swim through the net. When bait is really deep a 5/8 mesh is my choice.
