It's lateral scale flash coated in Loon UV clear fly finish.

It's lateral scale flash coated in Loon UV clear fly finish. Oh okay. That is pretty stuff and I have used it for a Jig that the pattern came from a fly, but I also palmered some hackle over it before I hit the light. I really just wanted to try out using the glue back several years ago when I first got some. Here is a picture of the jig I first did with it and also used some Lateral Scale, but can't see it very well in the picture.

The real advantage of this pattern in normally when tying a fly or jig that has palmered hackle all it takes is a tooth to cut the feather and it comes apart so they use some wire over the top of it to hold it down better. However with this method the stem is embedded into the glue so it's not coming apart.

I tried a couple if those myself. First one I used the crystal synthetic hackle which isn't stiff enough to stand up so it pretty much covered up the lateral scale underneath. Then I tried one with saddle hackle that turned out a little better.

Txmedic when you wrap the hackle try to keep the space between the wraps equal and for a pattern like this make sure you leave enough room for the underbody to show some. Also saddle hackle is better, but the regular strung saddle hackle is not as stiff as a little higher quality hackle is and of course the dry fly hackle is the most stiff and also the most narrow feathers. This was most likely some soft hackle which comes from hens or from the soft hackle from a Rooster which is neither cape nor saddle.
