 Need help with a 1989 Evenrude 25hp

My dad has a 25hp motor that starts misfiring all of a sudden at speed. he drops it down to neutral and it idles ok. when he puts it back in gear it is fine but as soon as he increases the throttle it starts shaking again.
sometimes he turns it off and puts it in neutral turns it back on and it will run fine.
Sometimes just putting it in neutral fixes the issue.
Any ideas?

Get a compression test and check the plugs, wires (just replace the plugs proactively, this may help). Fresh fuel. If still doing it, then get the carbs checked/cleaned.
