Fished back side Mustang Island, the sw shore of CC Bay, and the Port A jetties on 6-30 to 7-2 and July 8th & 9th. Were looking more for reds, but didn't have a lot of luck on them, couple of 17' rats. SonTwo caught a nice Sheepie.
Did OK on trout, caught about 90 total over the 5 days, fishing about 3-4 hours each morning. Used live shrimp, free lined and under Alameda popping cork and had the less experienced boys and ladies doing most of the fishing. Lots of small trout and they missed a lot of strikes, seems like to bite was soft when free-lining. Needed to let the fish put almost full load on the rod before setting the hook. Lots of small croaker getting hooked, some getting close to eating sized.
We kept a few trout on some of the trips for eating, released rest. Largest was SonOne's 23" 3 lber. SonTwo's largest was 19".
We had a fine bite dialed in on Tuesday morning in CC Bay until Flipper and family showed up and scattered the trout. Each fish was over 15", and bite was excellent until
they showed up. Pinche Flippers...............
Not bad for drive up fishing in early July. We waded each day. We also had a local drive up while us 5 were wading and few others were out there, and the local ran a sail line out between us into an area we were heading to fish. We adjusted cause the sail line was in our way, and caught some fish. When we got done and returned to shore I asked the younger guy at the vehicle if they were local, and he said yes. Told him that wasn't cool to run the line out amongst us. Dad came in while were getting ready to go and asked what was the problem. Told him and he said he adjusted the line to miss us. Told him that IMO he was wrong, we and the others were out there and fishing before he showed up. He believed was in the good, I didn't, so we left it at that. I wasn't going to waste any more time getting him to understand at that point. Hope he rethinks what he did. Hope so. Cut off our wading and fishing direction to the area we wanted to fish. Inconsiderate guy, but maybe he'll see what was wrong. After cooling a bit, (was just a bit irritated) told the young'ns if that's the worst you have happen to you while fishing a public area, you've got a great life going.
Fished the Port A jetties and did poor, couple days too early for the evening full moon influenced outgoing tide, but we had to try. Few Skippies and a couple small Mangroves, but nothing worth eyeballing.
Personally if I was fishing this weekend, I'd be hitting the south Jetty Friday evening if all possible, and then again on Saturday and fish the outgoing tide until late evening using live piggies(Pinfish) for Redfish. Water is beautiful green now compared to last full moon in June. Today and Friday would be ideal and full moon day a bit less.
The reds should be up along the Mustang Island shoreline Saturday evening and possible a few solid trout with the full moon on Saturday.
BTW, seaweed is worse along Mustang Island than on N.Padre, but if the winds die, hit the surf. Color is good, weeds are not so bad that you can't fish. Forecast is looking pretty good so far for Sunday evening/Monday morning.
Few fish we kept.
