I just went out and got the RLS+ combo. Really excited about it - gonna start my casting practice soon and will hopefully be on the water in a few weeks. Thanks for the advice.

cabela's rods are equal to their completion at each price point.

I have a dozen or so and all of them are good tools for the money spent.
I've never been disappointed.

since kmart got out of the flyfishing business cabela's IS my local fly shop.

price will drive most of your early purchases and cabela's rods are worth the money.

however most rod makers have put out acceptable products at the near end of the money spectrum.

so go out and give some the walmart wiggle, cast them if you can and buy an outfit that suits you.

good luck!

I guess it would not be right for me to comment on this thread...LOL...having worked for the store for nearly 5 years...however, here I go.

For the $$, you generally cannot go wrong with out branded equipment. For the new fly fisher, we are where you need to come. We generally have the best pricing for entry level or almost entry level equipment. On the better rods/reels, we are competitive with anyone. As several of you mentioned, the RLS+ combo at current sale pricing cannot be beat anywhere...as of Thursday the 22nd, we were sold out...order on line or call the store for inventory.

What some do not know is that our better rods are REALLY good...the top of the line MTx rod beat out a Sage in an internal casting meeting a couple of years ago...while I can't say which Sage...let's just say it was one of the better rods...however, with that said, I personally own 3 Sage rods and really LIKE them. They are wonderful...I own 1 Cabela's rod...a CZN 11 ft 4wt...and it is awesome.

Thanks for all the nice comments about us. We try hard to earn your business...we hope to see you soon. For the beginning fly fisher, don't forget we have free Fly Fishing University classes...call the store for scheduling. This is NOT available in Allen, Waco or Buda.

We haven't seen the LSi spey rod, but we have seen many of the regular LSi rods and they are very nice. We use LSi 5wts as out student casting rods. The Spey versions should be just as good.

The WLx reel is new this year and looks as it's going to be a good one too. It has all the great Lamson Waterworks DNA (conical drag, designed and manufactured in the USA, etc).

Both rod and reel have long term warranties (25 years for both).

You can't go wrong with that combination.

Thanks. Placed an order, but have to wait, cause it's back ordered.

It's more than the catfish would do.

Cabelas makes good stuff. I have a 4wt L-tech rod I picked up for pennies on the dollar when they were having a clearance sale and it has been a great trout rod for 3 years now, and has also landed some larger toothy fish, bass, and a catfish or two. it weighs around 2oz but can cast like a dream, I'm satisfied with cabelas rods, it also comes with a 25 year warranty I think, and the guy at the counter told me most of the higher end stuff is 25 years

I have a 3wt three forks rod that I like. I wanted a shorter light rod for small fish and its great. I also ended up with a longer Redington Ct 3wt that I prefer now. I think they closed out the model over the last few years for little more than the three forks rods.

The combo prices at cabelas are great deals and hard to beat as well.

Did you end up getting anything?

Have a 5wt set up and had done fine. thumb

I bought the 5ft 2 wt tqr and love it. Tiny rod handles gills and bass with way more backbone than I would have thought. 100 bucks for a rod isn't bad either. I compare it with my TFo 3 wt. But I have to say TFO still makes an awesome rod.
