Plastics have long been a staple in the bass fishing arena and can be very productive when used correctly.. Dealing with the very typical summertime weed situation at the lakes we've been fishing require weedless lures and flies to have any hope of catching bass out of the thick cover.

At the risk of being excommunicated from the "high and mighty" fly fishing community I used the fly rod to fling a weightless plastic worm into the thick weed mat floating all around the edges of a bass filled stock tank at the Indian Spirit Springs ranch.

Watch what happens when worms fly!

In all reality the only thing that is a little different is the delivery method.. An unweighted small plastic worm can be delivered with heavier line just as far (if not further) with a fly rod than with conventional spinning gear using the same pound test line.
When dealing with a good size bass in thick cover you need the horsepower that heavy equipment provides.. rod and line.. don't attempt this with a light fly rod that you value, it will break trying to dislodge any bass from the thick weed bed they often dive straight down into just after taking the fly!

It is essential that you strip-set the hook when a bass takes the worm.

Another excellent video!!

Hook, you were excommunicated as soon as your popper dropper hit the water. Don't worry about it though. I nominate you as president of the Redneck Fishing Club which I am more than happy to be a member of. Catching fish actually adds to the enjoyment of casting.

You know you are a redneck when......Your fly fishing rod has a plastic worm on the end of the line.

Agreed J-Moe. Anytime I sniff the odor of "purism" (what is that anyway really? Purism? A separate topic) I tend to re-post this

Trust this guy! He taught me the fine art of worm and lizard on the fly!!!

Ben, you might slow your retrieve a little also. Hot weather usually means "slow and low".

No purists in my house!!!

My yak is an OldTown Loon 111 & If I don't ease up on the caffeine I'll never slow down wink I'm wound up tighter than spandex on a pig.. The top-water bite is definitely slowing down as the surface heats up..

Good stuff. I bought some Spinners today to fill my 10 year old nieces tackle box and I decided to read the back of the package for once. It said how to retrieve their smaller spinner on a fly rod. Since they make spoons for fly rods then why not a worm or a spinner. I have a buddy that tyes up a fly that looks like a piece of bread that he uses for Carp fishing lol. If you can make it work then more power to you. Old Town makes a great kayak. I used to have their Twin Otter and then used a sit on top one for dropping shark bait. Well worth the money. Thanks for sharing the great video.

Thank you for your reply, I like your video format very interesting.
I have tried the Tiny Brush Hog for bass with no success yet caught more on regular Blue Gill flies.
