I'm moving to Texas soon and was just wondering how many miles offshore you need to go for specific species, what months are best for what fish... Just basic stuff.

Red snapper. King mackerel. And how far do you have to go for dorado and tuna?

Dilly,
I fish mostly out of port O'Connor. There is a big rig that is about 9 miles from the jetty, it is heavily fished, so the snapper are smaller, but I catch Kings (largest 35 lbs), Ling, bull reds and mangrove snapper on this rig. The key to catching state water snapper is finding structure that is not fished to hard. This will hold the bigger fish.
Unfortunately, the snapper can only be caught in State waters, since they are out of season. This year the snapper season started on June 1st and ended on June 9th for federal waters.
As far as dorado, it really depends on the currents and where the "blue" water is. I have caught them as close as 15 miles from shore. The key to dorado is finding floating debris or weed patches/lines. Even something as small as a 2X4 will hold dorado.
For the Tuna, depends on the type that you want to target. I catch black fin quite a bit as close as 15 miles. Look for the birds.
Good luck and welcome to Texas
My Pop always said, big bait.... Big Fish!!!!

Thanks for the responses. I'm in San Diego right now for some tuna fishing. Once I get back I will look into some charters when my dad gets some time off.
